In 2010 the Telstra Art Award will celebrate its 27th year and is the longest-running art award dedicated to the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

It is considered the premier national event in the Australian Indigenous arts calendar. Telstra has been sponsoring this Award for 19 years.

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) and Telstra are proud to announce the inaugural Telstra New Media Award with the theme of ‘connections’ as a new category this year.

Telstra Local Area General Manager, North Coast, Michael Sharpe, said new media is an emerging category with more and more artists incorporating technology into their works, and is an exciting evolution of the Telstra Art Award.

“The award presents a fantastic opportunity for local artists to gain national exposure for their artworks, as well as take advantage of the financial benefits that can flow-on to their local communities from a win in these prestigious awards,” he said.

“Telstra is committed to supporting the growth of the Australian Indigenous arts community, by continuing to increase the opportunities for established and emerging artists across the country.”

Telstra will provide an additional $3000 prizemoney for this New Media category.

Telstra will continue to award the $40,000 Telstra Award and $4000 to other categories including the Telstra General Painting Award, the Telstra Bark Painting Award, the Telstra Work on Paper Award and the Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award in addition to the New Media Award ($3,000).

Last year’s $40,000 Telstra Award winner Danie Mellor (pictured) has had his winning entry, From Rite to Ritual, acquired by the National Gallery of Australia.

In 2010 the Telstra Art Award will celebrate its 27th year and is the longest-running art award dedicated to the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. It is considered the premier national event in the Australian Indigenous arts calendar.

The 27th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award exhibition opens, and award presentations will be made, on Friday, 13 August 2010.

Entries for the 27th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award close on Friday, 2 April 2010.

Entries for the inaugural Telstra New Media Award will close on Friday, 30 April.

Filmed on location in Chile by renowned photographer/cinematographer Dave Homcy, El Mar Mi Alma captures the essence of a coastal road trip and surfing journey with some of the world’s top pros – Dave Rastovich, Ramon Navarro, Dane Ward, Crystal Thornburg, Chris del Moro, Joel Parkinson, Christian Merello, Leo Acevedo and Diego Medina.

Director Jones describes the film as essentially a visual tone poem, which juxtaposes images, music, poetry and animation and inter-cuts cinematic surf sequences with littoral landscapes, local people and places, the movements of cast and crew, to paint a picture of Chile’s beauty and close association with the sea.

The film also features an original soundtrack by Chilean folk artist Manuel Garcia.

Jones’ and Velasco’s presentation is part of the launch of a month-long local celebration of international surf art and culture, taking place throughout March, showcasing new and different perspectives on our relationship with the ocean, through film, photography painting, drawing and sculpture.

It starts with Byron Bay International Film Festival (BBFF), which has always featured surf films and keeps a strong focus on this specialist genre throughout its 10-day 2010 program, from March 5 to 13.

BBFF Director, J’aimee Skippon Volke, says highlights of this year’s Festival include Bob McTavish, A Life in Shape, about one of Byron’s most famous pioneering surf personalities; The Arena: North Shore, chronicling the epic 2008 winter season in Oahu; and Somewhere Near Tapachula, which tells the story of an Australian couple who changed the lives of orphans and street kids in Tapachula, Mexico, with hope, love and a set of boards.

She has programmed nine surf films this year, but points out that this is just a tip of the iceberg of great films in this specialist genre.

On Friday February 26 at Harvest, she’ll join Jones and Velasco, whose film will premiere (as a sneak preview) at BBFF, to provide an insight to the latest developments and trends in surf film and docos, what she’s included in her program and why.

Then from March 11 to 25, Retrospect Galleries presents El Mar Mi Alma, the exhibition, exploring the global phenomenon of surf art across a multitude of media, from Byron Bay to Chile, the crest to underground.

The show will feature works by international surf artists, photographers and sculptors including Dave Homcy and Crystal Thornburg (Hawaii), Harry Daly (USA), Christian Tuki (Rapa Nui), Jose Nacho Vargas and Alfredo Escobar (Chile), plus leading Australian surf artists, Mambo’s Jeff Raglus, Quicksilver’s Peter Webb, legendary surf photographer Paul Witzig and some exceptional new talent such as Ryan Heywood, Luke Taaffe, James McMillan and Alberto Sanchez.

A preview of the show will be on exhibition at Harvest on February 26, and two local surf artists will talk about the unique influences that have shaped the development of their practice. James MacMillan, an Australian former pro surfer turned painter, and Alberto Sanchez, a Spanish artist/photographer/musician, who grew up in Madrid and first saw the ocean when he was aged 14,

El Mar Mi Alma (The Sea My Soul) at Harvest Café, pays homage to local surf culture and gives a view to what’s happening internationally. Come along to meet some of the local artists and filmmakers who are a part of this incredible movement, plus enjoy great food (buffet style BBQ) and music by acclaimed singer/songwriter Danny Ross.

Starts 6.30pm, Friday February 26 at Harvest Cafe, 18 Old Pacific Highway, Newrybar. Tickets $35 per person, bookings, 02 6687 2644

In Fred’s Footsteps uses pictures and stories to outline the life and achievements of Fred Hollows and the continuing work of The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Fred Hollows was a passionate ophthalmologist who became known for his work helping restore the eyesight of thousands of people in developing countries and his drive to improve Indigenous health here in Australia. He lost his battle with cancer in 1993 aged 63.

Since 1992 The Fred Hollows Foundation has worked in collaboration with local blindness prevention and other health organisations in more than 38 countries throughout Africa, South and South-East
Asia, Australia and the Pacific.

Fred Hollow’s widow Gabi Hollows hopes the exhibition will offer locals a chance to learn more about Fred’s dream of eradicating avoidable blindness and improving Indigenous health.

“The exhibition gives people the chance to learn more about Fred’s life and the work of the Foundation, which I think is extremely important given that he remains a very significant person in Australian history,” Ms Hollows said.

“So far the impact of this work has been enormous, but there is still much to do. The health of Indigenous Australians remains at dramatically lower levels than for other Australians, and of the 45 million people who are blind globally, three out of four people don’t need to be blind.”

Following its display at the Tweed Heads Library, the exhibition will continue to tour regional and metropolitan libraries in NSW throughout 2010.

The Tweed Heads Library is located in the Tweed Heads Civic Centre in Brett Street. Library opening hours are Monday to Thursday 9.30am to 5pm, Friday 9.30am to 7pm and Saturday 9.30am to noon.

For more information about The Fred Hollows Foundation visit the website www.hollows.org.au

Books will come to life next Friday when Murwillumbah’s Living Library meets for the first time at the Coolamon Centre in Tumbulgum Road.

Locals with interesting tales to tell will act as ‘books’ to be ‘read’ by borrowers.

The Living Books have chosen a title for themselves, then tell their story to another person – called a book ‘Borrower’ – sharing their experiences in a safe environment in an informal one-on-one 30-minute session.

The Living Books are simply asked to be themselves.

Area Librarian Jo Carmody said the Murwillumbah Living Library offers you, the borrower, an opportunity to understand the lives of people in their community better.

“It is just like a regular library with one difference – in the Living Library the ‘books’ are people,” Ms Carmody said.

The Living Library project was founded in Denmark by the Danish youth non-government organisation ‘Stop the Violence’ as a means to increasing understanding between cultural groups.

It has been taken up around the world and Lismore launched the first of its kind in Australia in November 2006.

Tweed Shire Council’s Cultural Development Officer Lesley Buckley said the project’s goal was to strengthen community, democracy and social justice through celebrating and promoting diversity, encouraging understanding and respect, breaking down barriers and building bridges, and challenging stereotypes and prejudices.

Titles on offer at the first session on 26 February are:

The Game of Breathing – living a creative life with Aspergers Syndrome

People Helping People – living large with no money, community exchange

A Life of Travelling – living in other cultures

Survivor – living during tough times, a life built on art and sustainability

Too Young – becoming a mum at 16, learned to cook, became a dairy farmer, community volunteer

Vision Impaired Print Maker, Second Sight – print maker using tactile surfaces as printing plates, getting through life crisis

From Test Tube and String – journey through 43 years of medical laboratory anecdotes beginning in 1942, 60 years of marriage, living in the Tweed

Never too old to make your vocation your vacation – businessman with a passion for outdoor recreation

Opening Maria Montessori’s Golden Gate to the future

Curiosity motivated this Cat – following paths mapped by an enquiring mind

Not the triumph but the struggle – Torres Strait connections – Sydney, near fatal accident, survival, rehab, involvement in sports administration including Melbourne Olympic 1956

Oh! I See – art of seeing is generally taken for granted by most, for those with defective eyesight vision can be a goal

Taylor Made – Two generations of community involvement

Mum I don’t want to die – Daughter’s battle to live – double lung transplant

Changes in society – women/society from 1940s to now

Eco friendly homes and gardens – eco-designing your home and garden.

The session on Friday 26 February is from 10.30am to12.30 pm at the Coolamon Centre (old art gallery) in Tumbulgum road, Murwillumbah.

Bookings are not necessary. For more information, call the Murwillumbah Library on (02) 6670 2427. For further information about Living Libraries visit www.livinglibrary.org.au.

The $35,000 Country Energy Art Prize for Landscape Painting is Australia’s richest annual landscape prize.

In its eighth year, the art pPrize showcases the wealth of artistic talent across country and coastal New South Wales while contributing to the visual arts industry.

A series of regional launches are held across NSW announcing that the annual prize is open for 2010, and inviting artists to enter.

Entries for the 2010 Art Prize close on 25 June 2010, with the finalists exhibited at the Glasshouse Arts, Conference and Entertainment Centre in Port Macquarie. The winner will be announced at an opening event at the Glasshouse on 30 September.

Entry is exclusive to artists whose principal place of residence is within Country Energy’s network distribution area, which covers 95 per cent of New South Wales’ land mass.

The prize is open to all artistic styles, mediums and contexts, ranging from figurative to abstract, charcoal to traditional oil paint and landscapes to seascapes.

The Art Prize also includes the Youth Encouragement Award. This award is designed to support and promote the work of emerging young artists from regional NSW. The additional prize of $5000 from Country Energy is presented each year to an artist who has entered Countryscapes and is aged 25 years or younger.

Artists and art lovers are all invited to the launch of Countryscapes 2010. The guest speaker, and three time Countryscapes exhibitor, painter Robyn Sweaney from Mullumbimby, will speak about her experiences as a regional artist and being a finalist in the prize.

To that end, QSE’s Christina Koch (pictured) is currently touring northern NSW in search of budding public speakers and community leaders.

In a series of workshops from Armidale to Lismore, Christina will work with groups of business practitioners, presenters, and students of performance to develop vocal resonance, persuasive speaking, personal connection to text, and development of memory – all through a look at the life and work of William Shakespeare.

Ms Koch is a theatre practitioner (voice coach, actor, director, producer) of over 15 years experience in Brisbane, working with the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble, Queensland Theatre Company and the Bell Shakespeare Company during that time.

Since 2002 she has trained in the Linklater approach to voice training through the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble with master teacher Rob Pensalfini, and internationally in 2008 at Shakespeare and Company in Massachusetts, where she was invited to return as a guest participant in a specialised workshop on Shakespeare’s Rhetoric.

Back in Australia, she applied this learning to her direction of a cast of senior legal practitioners, including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland and the former Attorney-General, in a reading of Twelve Angry Men for the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble.

Christina was assistant director to John Bell AO on Bell Shakespeare and Queensland Theatre Company’s 2009 co-production of The Alchemist, and was script writer for Kerry O’Brien’s Hypothetical at the 2009 Australian Public Sector Anti-Corruption Conference.

Ms Koch said today that she is ‘looking forward to working with people who genuinely want to improve their connection to their audience, and to be more confident, ethical, and persuasive in their approach to public speaking – Shakespeare teaches us to be bolder in our willingness to make connections.’

After an enthusiastic reception by members of Armidale’s Chamber of Commerce and Dorrigo’s Dramatic Club, and calls for return extended workshops, the ‘Shakespeare’s Playground’ workshop now comes to South Grafton’s refurbished Walker’s Marina Hotel on 20 February, and to the Dorrigo Theatre on 6 & 7 March, with future workshops under discussion for Maclean/Yamba, Lismore and Ballina.

Participants in the recent ‘Shakespeare’s Playground’ workshop in Dorrigo described the session as ‘an easy introduction to the world of Shakespeare’ and expressed enjoyment of the workshop’s variety, pace and flexibility.

On Saturday morning they will also present a free talk and demonstration on how to turn an old wooden box or timber panel into a stunning original artwork.

Luke Taaffe’s beautiful flowing detailed work represents a life living by the ocean and its surrounding environment. Waves, boats, whales and octopus all make regular appearances on his colourful panels, usually taken from weathered old wooden boxes.

Taaffe says the eroded and often-found materials he paints on reflect the salt-decaying effects of oceanside living and how it impacts on man’s desire for development and progress.

In contrast, the vibrant colours and ink detail he uses show the fun and privilege one has to be raised on Australia’s coastline.

“There is always a lot of colour within my work and that is because the coast is like a wonderland to me, ever changing and always beautiful,” he said.

“I try to capture this beauty and the power and terror that the ocean can bring to our lives, which in turn is showing my respect for it. I feel there is a constant struggle of balance between man and the environment and I try and express this through these isolated and almost dark scenes.”

Originally from the tiny central coast town of Wamberal, he moved to the surf mecca of Torquay, Victoria, last year to take up a dream graphic design position with Australian label, Roxy.

Like Taaffe, Mia Taninaka juggles a successful design career with her personal art practice and surf habit.

By day she supplies quirky illustrations and designs for clients such as Channel V, Volcom and Mambo, whilst at night she likes to draw and paint on found wooden objects and panels, creating stunning colourful imaginative works inspired by her Japanese heritage.

“From an early age, I was lucky enough to do a lot of overseas travelling with my family,” she says.

“Which opened up my eyes to a very enchanting world of different cultures, colours and customs.

“Travelling through South-East Asia in particular, I became aware of how detached from the natural world we are here in the west.

“Eastern cultures seem to have a more holistic approach to life and the role we play in the universe. They believe in the soul and spirit and have a deep respect and dignity for all creatures of the animal and plant kingdoms.

“My parents taught me to appreciate and connect with the universe and its energy. To a lot of people a leaf is simply a leaf, but I like to look a little deeper.

“When I’m painting, everything has to connect. All the elements have a purpose and important significance.”

Taaffe says the title of their new show, The InBetween, refers to the diverse lives that he and Taninaka lead, incorporating art, fashion and graphics, and the challenge of trying to find the balance with everything else that comes with being a young creative.

The exhibition opens 6pm Friday February 12 at Retrospect Galleries, 52 Jonson Street, Byron Bay, everyone welcome.

Or come along at 11am on Saturday for a free talk and demonstration and find out how to turn that old box or panel of wood in the shed into something new and beautiful.

“Hopeful aspirants from every corner of the continent start scanning their lives for material, hoping that their short time on the planet can filter into a killer 5-minute routine,” an organier, local comic Mandy Nolan, said.

“To date there are over 20 entrants in the Byron Bay heat of RAW comedy, prompting national organisors to schedule a second heat to take in all the talent.

“Byron Bay is one of the more regional areas but is a strong contender when it comes to RAW, with more entrants than some of the States.

“Byron entrants have a history of doing well, with Ellen Briggs (pictured) of Mullumbimby making it to the national final just four years ago.

“Ellen credits this with kick-starting her comedy career and giving her the confidence boost she needed to make that dramatic sidestep from tuck-shop mum to stand-up comedian. Ellen is now very much in demand in comedy rooms all around the country.

“Hannah Gadsby won RAW and found herself coming second at Edinburgh’s So You think You’re Funny.

“Hannah has been touted as one of the most promising up-and-coming comics in the country.

“Adam Hills directed and mentored her for her solo show at the Melbourne Comedy Festival last year and Hannah is now spied on the telly on a manner of programs, with a few ABC hosting jobs coming to fruition this year.

“Hannah did her first spot after a Byron Shire ACE comedy course and still uses a lot of the jokes she used for her very first performance.”

Other local success stories include Sandy Gandhi and Liam Holm, both making it to State finals.

Find out who the new comedy sensations are, and cheer them on to greatness. Heat one is at the Byron Services Club on Monday 25 January 8pm. $10/15. Bookings to 6684 3443 or tix at the club. MC Mandy Nolan. Special guest judges.

The second heat is now scheduled for the same venue on Monday 8 February. Ånyone still wishing to enter RAW can do so through the website: www.comedyfestival.com.au/raw

The Tweed’s towns and villages will once again display their Aussie pride at a range of official and local ceremonies and entertainment planned for Australia Day 2010, 26 January.

The Tweed Shire Australia Day Committee will host this year’s official event at Burringbar, with the program commencing at 11am.

The official Tweed Shire Australia Day Awards for 2009 will be presented by the Tweed’s Australia Day Ambassador Glenn Sargeant and Tweed Shire Australia Day Committee Chairman Don Beck.

These include Tweed Shire Citizen of the Year, an Arts and Cultural Award, sporting awards, Community Event of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

“Australia Day is a great day of traditions to remember, as no matter what country you’re from, we are all Australians,” Mr Beck said.

“Tweed residents have always been great supporters of Australia Day and we urge everyone to come out and go along to one of the many local events to celebrate this great day in our history,” he said.

Twenty-seven Tweed residents have chosen Australia Day 2010 to become Australian citizens, in a ceremony to be conducted as part of the official program by Mayor of Tweed Warren Polglase.

In addition to the official program at Burringbar, local events will be held across the Tweed, including new events at Tweed Heads and on the Tweed Coast at Bogangar/Cabarita Beach.

The focus will be on family fun at Tweed Heads, with fun Aussie-themed games in Chris Cunningham Park such as thong throwing.

Music takes centre stage at Bogangar/Cabarita Beach, with the Bellywhackers Band playing from 9.15am outside the Surf Club.

The village of Tyalgum continues its Australia Day sporting traditions, hosting the Tyalgum Cup cycle race and the hotly-contested ‘Australia versus India’ junior and senior cricket matches on Bruce Bartrim Oval.

Full program of events:

* Celebrated former school principal Glenn Sargeant OAM is the Tweed’s Australia Day Ambassador for 2010.

Mr Sargeant was the head of Plumpton High School in western Sydney for 18 years until his retirement in 2004.

He established the Young Mothers in Education program in 1994, which ensured teenagers who fell pregnant would have a supportive environment in which to finish their schooling. More than 150 completed the program, a third finished the Higher School Certificate (HSC) and many went on to university.

Many may remember Mr Sargeant from the four-part documentary TV series Plumpton High Babies, which screened on ABC-TV in 2003. This series received huge public applause and led to much public debate over the subject of teenage pregnancy.

Today, Mr Sargeant’s program is being emulated by schools in NSW, Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland and the United Kingdom.

Mr Sargeant was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australian in 2004 for his compassion, leadership, service to education and to youth. His other awards include:
• 2003 – NSW Community Father of the Year Award
• 2004 and 2005 – nominated for Australian of the Year
• 2005 – received National Australia Day Council’s Local Hero (Metropolitan NSW) Award
• 2006 – Father Chris Riley’s “Youth off the Streets”, ‘Shine’ community award.
