Two men drown at Byron Bay

Tragedy has unfolded on a northern NSW beach this afternoon, with two males drowning at an unpatrolled area of Bryon Bay.

Shortly after 1pm, on-duty lifesavers were notified by members of the public to a person in difficulty 300m further down the beach.

Northern Rivers a priority region for CSG environmental assessment

The Northern Rivers is to be one of the first regions to undergo a detailed scientific assessment of the impact of coal seam gas mining, including impacts on our water., Page MP Janelle Saffin said today.

The Federal Environment Minister, Tony Burke, has announced the first regions to be assessed by the Interim Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Coal Mining, to provide better information for decision makers to ensure protection of water resources.

Celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue today visited the Byron Farmers Market to research his new book, “The Best Farmers Markets in Australia”.

Best known for his cooking show with Curtis Stone, “Surfing the Menu”, O’Donoghue spent hours talking to stall holders, taking notes and tasting our unique produce.

John’s pumpkin weighs in at 67kg

This is John Leadbeatter from Rukenvale, who had his pumpkin weighed in at 67kg at the Kyogle Bazaar’s weigh-in of “Grow Kyogle’s Biggest Pumpkin” on Saturday at Kyogle Showground.

The Bazaar congratulated John on his wonderful first effort at growing a giant pumpkin to this size against all odds with a very wet summer.

Portrait of Margot Anthony by artist Robert Hannaford on display

A portrait of Margot Anthony AM, one of the Tweed River Art Gallery’s strongest patrons, is a highlight of New Acquisitions to the Collection, the latest exhibition at the Gallery featuring over 70 new works.

The portrait by Robert Hannaford, commissioned by the Tweed River Art Gallery Foundation with assistance from the Friends of the Gallery and the Gallery’s donation fund, was completed as part of the artist’s exhibition Robert Hannaford: Open Studio, shown at the Gallery in late 2011 where visitors were offered the rare opportunity to see the artist and his sitter at work.

Telstra urges northern NSW residents to be alert as telephone scams surge

Telstra is urging consumers, as part of National Consumer Fraud Awareness Week 2012, to be wary of the growing number of telephone scams being reported.

New figures released by the ACCC this week show 52 per cent of people who reported scams in 2011 said they were contacted via telephone.

Byron abuzz with macadamia harvest celebrations

Twelve prominent journalists from across the country enjoyed a cooking demonstration and lunch with Gavin Hughes, The Byron at Byron Resort’s Head Chef on March 1.

The event was part of a two-day tour of the Northern Rivers macadamia industry, which took the journalists to Picadilly Park macadamia farm, Macadamia Processing Company (MPC) and the Byron Farmers Market.

David Keenan has been appointed to the position of General Manager of Tweed Shire Council, following a unanimous decision at a confidential Extraordinary Meeting of Council on Monday.

Mr Keenan will take the reins on April 30, following the retirement of the current General Manager, Mike Rayner, on April 27.

High school students get a head start into university

Southern Cross University has welcomed the first group of senior high school students who are embarking on their tertiary studies through a new and innovative program, SCU Head-Start.

SCU Head-Start has been designed to give exceptional Years 11 and 12 students across the University’s footprint, from Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast, the opportunity to complete a unit of university study while still at school.
