About 4:50pm (Thursday 29 September 2011), police were performing random breath testing duties on the Pacific Highway near Grafton when a Honda Accord allegedly failed to stop at the RBT site.

Police conducted a search of the area and located the car stopped on Armidale Road.

The off-duty officer, a male leading senior constable from a specialist command, was spoken to and subjected to a breath test, returning a positive reading.

UPDATE: Byron United has cancelled the planned rally.

Two events over the next few weeks will focus on Byron Shire Council’s efforts to repair one of the busiest tourist roads and walkways in the country, Lighthouse Road, which leads to the iconic Cape Byron.

The council will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, June 17, at the Byron Bay Surf Club, commencing at 5pm, to discuss the status of the Lighthouse Road repairs and boardwalk reinstatement.

And on Saturday June 28, Byron United will organise a rally marking the third anniversary of the road’s closure.

Lighthouse Road has been one-way traffic only since heavy rains caused a land slip.

Efforts to repair it have been stymied by several factors — one side of the road is National Park, the other is housing, and the road is constructed on fragile earth.

The council says that Tuesday’s meeting will be attended by consultants GHD and council staff, who will provide information regarding the issues relating to the delay in proceeding with the project.

Further information regarding ‘What’s happened at Lighthouse Road’ can be found at the council’s website.

Contact Hayden Kress, Project Officer, on 6685 9315 if you require any additional details about the public meeting.

Meanwhile, Byron United says that after three years of disrepair to Lighthouse Road and the walkway, it has decided ‘enough is enough’, hence it is organising a third anniversary rally on Saturday 28 June to ensure that the RTA, the State Government and local Council are made aware ‘that we are not going to take it any more’.

“Byron United is asking anybody in town who is frustrated by the delays to come along,” it said.

“It’s bring-your-own placard and meet at the Peace Pole, to the east of the Surf Club, at 11.30am for a walk to Lighthouse Road.”

“Byron United board members will be conducting a tin collection from passing pedestrians and motorists who would like to contribute a gold coin to getting the road fixed. The money raised will be presented to the council.

“Then it will be a pleasant walk back for a sausage sizzle at Clarks Beach.”

Bike groups, runners, walkers, residents of Wategos and Lighthouse Road, visitors and concerned residents are all invited to attend.

There will be a prize for the best placard on the day.
