Environmentalist, league player win SCU Alumnus awards

A leading Lismore environmentalist, Gordon Fraser-Quick, has been named Southern Cross University’s 2010 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year, while rugby league legend Steve Price has won the Young Alumnus of the Year award.

The awards, presented at a ceremony in Ballina on Friday evening, highlight the significant achievements Southern Cross University graduates are making in a diverse range of fields, both in Australia and internationally.

Eli Cook wins a NSW Sport and Recreation Indigenous Scholarship

A love of sports spurred Eli Cook into studying for a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science degree at Southern Cross University.

Now in his second year and ‘loving it’, Eli has won a NSW Sport and Recreation Indigenous Scholarship worth $10,000 over two years. The scholarship is part of the Rising Stars Scholarships program.

“This is going to make a huge difference to my financial situation,” Eli said.

“I study pretty well full-time doing four units, as well as working part-time as the assistant manager at Farmer Charlie’s Fruit Barn in Evans Head, but when you are living away from home, money is always tight.

SCU to host annual HSC Study Day on June 17

With HSC exams just a few months away, the 10th annual Higher School Certificate Study Day for students and teachers is being held at Southern Cross University on Thursday, June 17.

The popular event brings over 1000 students and their teachers from all over the region to the Lismore campus to participate in information sessions designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed to get through the HSC.

Teens go Green at SUSS Forum

The Students Using Sustainable Strategies (SUSS) Forum was held from 26–28 May for the fourth year at Linnaues Estate, Broken Head, with overwhelming success. 

Enthusiastic students and teachers from 15 high schools across the region spent two days and nights sharing their skills and ideas on environmental issues and sustainability.

North Coast Student Sustainability Forum

May 24, 2010

Ninety high school students and teachers will gather on Jali country for the third Students Using Sustainable Strategies (SUSS) Forum from the 26th to 28th May.

The event, which will draw 15 high schools from across the Northern Rivers, focuses on building environmental leadership and management in schools.

With key involvement from five high school students on the organising committee, including the YEC (Youth Environment Council), this year’s Forum is set to be the best yet. 

There will be more workshops on leadership, finding funds and networking and an increase in student-facilitated workshops.

Project for Indigenous students to train in local pharmacies

May 6, 2010

Page MP Janelle Saffin today launched a local employment project for 15 Aboriginal high school students to study and train for careers in the pharmacy industry.

Ms Saffin said the Government is providing more than $112,000 to fund the project that was initiated by the Northern Rivers University Department of Rural Health, NSW Education Department, the North Coast Institute of Tafe and CONNECT.

Changes to student Youth Allowance to take effect from April 1

The Federal Government’s changes to student Youth Allowance will now start taking effect.

“After months of delays in the Senate, it is great to finally be able to say that the Youth Allowance changes are being rolled out,” local MPs Janelle Saffin and Justine Elliot announced.

“The first reforms coming into affect today are the introduction of new scholarships for higher education students receiving Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or Austudy and the lowering of the Age of Independence from 25 to 24 years.

“The Student Start-up Scholarship is worth $1300 in 2010 and will increase to $2128 plus indexation from 2011 to assist students with up-front costs such as textbooks and equipment.

Bert Berghuis retires after 22 years at Teven Tintenbar School

Teven Tintenbar Public School’s longest-serving teacher, Bert Berghuis, has retired after racking up an astonishing 22 years of teaching at the school, and having taught over 1000 local students.

Bert was presented with a retirement medallion by Greg Cloak, School Education Director, North Coast Region, at the school today.

Southern Cross University welcomes 3000 new students

Around 3000 new students will get their first taste of university life with a host of orientation activities under way at Southern Cross University campuses from February 15 to March 12.

Student Affairs Officer Ann-Maree Wilkinson said orientation, which this year is themed ‘Activate’, marked the beginning of university life for new students and a big welcome back to returning students.

Keeping those back-to-school costs down

As thousands of school students return to school today, Page MP Janelle Saffin is reminding parents to keep their receipts for educational materials so they can claim the education tax refund at the end of financial year.

“In the next week or so school kids from Kindie to Year 12 will be coming home with a list of materials they will need for the school year,” Ms Saffin said.

“I know this can be a bit of a stretch for the family budget, which is why the Rudd Government introduced the Education Tax Refund (ETR).

“With the ETR, eligible families can claim 50 per cent of a range of education expenses, and can receive back up to $375 for each primary school child and $750 for each high school student.
