State Government delivers changes for clubs
August 3, 2011
Member for Ballina, Don Page, says he is pleased to see yet another election commitment delivered by the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government today.
“The NSW Liberals and Nationals developed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Clubs NSW prior to the March election,” Mr Page said.
“I was pleased to sign the MOU in December last year, and even happier today to see key aspects of that commitment delivered with legislation introduced to Parliament today.”
The Gaming Machine Tax Amendment Bill reduces tax paid by registered clubs and introduces changes to the Club Community Support Scheme.
“Local clubs in the Ballina Electorate currently donate more than $5 million annually to community groups and activities, and this will increase by an additional $112,000 from September 1 this year,” Mr Page said.
The new ClubGRANTS Scheme will provide an estimated $85 million, in additional community support across NSW from registered clubs over the next four years.
“The reduction in club taxes will save clubs in the Ballina electorate more than $300,000 a year,” Mr Page said
“Clubs make a major social and economic contribution to our local communities. They provide funding to community and sporting organisations, employment opportunities and high-quality facilities that are accessible and affordable for everyone.”
The 18 clubs in the Ballina Electorate employ more than 400 people and make significant contributions to the local economy.
Under the former State Labor Government, more than 100 clubs had to shut their doors due to tax increases.
Further reforms outlined in the MOU will be announced shortly.
“When a club in a small community is forced to close, it has an enormous impact. The NSW Liberal and Nationals want to support regional and rural communities and we understand the important role that clubs play. This legislation will help support clubs both large and small,” Mr Page said.

Dr Tony Parkes, Chair of the EnviTE Management Committee, has welcomed Meg Nichols into her new role as General Manager of EnviTE Inc.
Meg Nichols replaces Graham Bird, who after 17 dedicated years at the helm of the organisation has retired to manage his farm property near Nimbin.
Mr Parkes commends both Graham Bird and Meg Nichols on the smooth transition that has taken place over the last few weeks.
He said Meg was appointed from a strong field of candidates and has an outstanding background in management and business development in the community sector, government and private industry.
“The Management Committee was impressed with Meg’s skills, experience, intelligence and energy,” he said.
“In Meg Nichols, we have found a strong leader and we are looking forward to working with her as we build EnviTE’s potential, services and performance.”
Meg Nichols has over 10 years experience in the training and employment sector. She has also worked in marketing, hospitality, real estate and justice administration.
She has a strong connection to the Northern Rivers area. A local girl, she attended Mullumbimby High School, has a BA as well as a graduate business qualification from Southern Cross University. Earlier in her career, she owned and operated a business in Lennox Head, where she still lives with her family.
Ms Nichols said her first priorities are to build on the strong foundations that Graham Bird has left as his legacy.
“I want to expand the range of employment, environment and training services provided by EnviTE in our local communities,” she said.
“EnviTE has always played a key role in developing local green skills and jobs and our environmental scientists are highly recognised for their expertise in assessment, planning, bush regeneration, monitoring and evaluation.
“We will continue to make a valuable contribution to improving the quality of our environment – an increasing need as a result of climate change and other threats.
“I will also be seeking to have dialogue with the community and government about ways to ensure the environment can be cared for in the long term and that this work is valued as an investment for all our futures.”
