Police charge two men after pursuit – Ballina

May 2, 2012

Two men will front a North Coast court today after police discovered a loaded gun, drugs and cash in a car following a high-speed pursuit at Ballina.

About 1.20pm yesterday (Tuesday 1 May 2012), Highway Patrol officers pursued a stolen maroon Ford Falcon XR6 along the Pacific Highway at Woodburn.

The pursuit was terminated a short time later for safety reasons.

Police initiated a second pursuit on the Pacific Highway at Ballina about 10 minutes later; however, it was terminated as well due to the stolen vehicle’s speed.

The Ford then sideswiped a silver-coloured Toyota Camry before crashing into a roadside railing.

The two male occupants got out of the vehicle and ran into bushland.

One of the men was arrested by police a short time later, while the other was taken into custody following an hour-long search operation.

A number of business owners contacted local police on Friday (20 April 2012) after the counterfeit notes were used to pay for good and services.

The counterfeit notes, totalling $240, have also been seized for forensic examination.

“I would encourage everyone to be extra vigilant when handling their money and if you do notice something odd or that doesn’t look quite right, please contact us immediately,” Insp Cairnduff said.

“The counterfeit notes that we have seized are not of great quality; however, in poor light or to the unsuspecting eye they could quite possibly be passed off as the real thing.”

Inquiries by local detectives are ongoing.

Anyone with information that might assist investigators is urged to contact Lismore Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Australia’s place in the world – Byron at Byron presents George Negus

April 22, 2012

On May 17 The Byron at Byron Resort and Spa will host legendary Australian media personality George Negus who – among other things – will share his thoughts on Australia’s place in a monumentally changing world.

The first in the Byron at Byron Presents dinner series for 2012, the event follows last year’s sell-out dinners with Bettina Arndt, Joanna Savill and David Clark.

George’s most recent book, The World From Down Under, is a compilation of interviews with  international “movers and shakers” for SBS Dateline that reveal George’s passion to put significant world events into perspective for Australians.

“The world is in turmoil and sometimes we Australians tend to overestimate our own problems,” says George. “I wouldn’t go so far as to call us the lucky country, but we are definitely a fortunate country. Less than 25 million people out of 7 billion world-wide, we need to think about that and get it into a realistic perspective. We need to see Australia in relation to the world – not the world in relation to Australia.

“There are people in other parts of the world facing hardship and difficulty we can’t imagine, yet our own politics has become so spiteful, small-minded and uninspired. There’s a leadership crisis in this country that goes right across the ideological spectrum. A lack of maturity and sophistication in our politics means we find ourselves complaining at a time when we should be thankful.

“I’ve seen Third World countries handle the up-and-down nature of their affairs in a more dignified way. I’m disappointed that we can’t get our heads out of our own sandy beaches.”
