Australian Football set for expansion; Tweed clubs to join competition

Australian Rules football is set to boost its profile in the Richmond-Tweed region with the addition of clubs from Murwillumbah, Pottsville and Tweed Heads to the Summerland AFL competition next season.

The new competition, which might be played under the banner of AFL Northern Rivers, also may include Casino Lions, who opted out of this year’s Summerland competition due to a lack of player numbers.

Summerland Junior AFL draw for August 3

Due to the wet weather late in the week all but one ground was closed for use, so the games planned to be played today will be played over the next two weeks.

These two weeks will be made up of all the games that were postponed throughout the season due to councils closing the sporting fields because of the wet weather.

Wayde Mills to help in local AFL 150-year celebrations

Ballina High will be the most easterly point on the mainland having a kick to celebrate 150 years of AFL when Kick Around Australia Day is held on Thursday, August 7, with former Lennox Head lad Wayde Mills, now a Brisbane Lion, joining in the celebrations.

Thursday, August 7, will mark 150 years since the first recorded game of Australian Football was played.

In 1858, Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar played the first recorded match of Australian Football on Richmond Paddock, today known as Yarra Park next to the MCG.

To celebrate this milestone, Kick Around Australia Day has been scheduled by the AFL to give all Australians the opportunity to join in the celebrations.
