First sod turned at new Tweed regional hockey field project

A new regional hockey field project is about to hit-off, with the Mayor of Tweed, Councillor Barry Longland, and Member for Lismore, Thomas George, turning the first sod this morning at the project site in Murwillumbah, watched by representatives from clubs across the Tweed.

Tweed Shire Council recently awarded a construction contract for a new synthetic ‘hybrid’ hockey pitch at Barrie Smith Fields in Murwillumbah, the Tweed’s regional centre for hockey.

Page electorate sports grants announced

Federal Member for Page Janelle Saffin is encouraging young sportspeople to apply for Local Sporting Champions grants, this year worth a total of $25,000.

Ms Saffin said funding for the popular program has doubled, helping more local families with the costs of competing at state and national competitions.

“The other great news is that our independent judging panel has agreed to continue lending its expertise in assessing grant applications,” she said.

“I am delighted to have former Socceroo and SBS football commentator Craig Foster, Olympic kayak silver medallist Jacqui Lachmann (nee Lawrence) and Southern Cross University Senior Lecturer Dr Dave Arthur on board again.’’

Ballina Hockey Club secures funding for new complex

Member for Ballina Don Page has congratulated the Ballina Hockey Club on its successful bid to secure $100,000 funding for the development of the Ballina Hockey Complex.

“I made a strong appeal in April this year in Parliament for this project to be supported and I’m pleased to see that common sense has prevailed,” Mr Page said.

The Ballina Hockey Club had secured funding from various sources for the $1.1 million project but needed a final $200,000 to build the complex.

“The new hockey complex will bring enormous benefits to Ballina and the North Coast,” Mr Page said.
