Lismore’s Jaiden Walker selected to participate in Qantas Joeys Training Camp

March 29, 2012

Lismore’s Jaiden Walker has been selected alongside fellow Northern NSW Institute of Sports (NNSWIS) players Brandon Lundy and Reece Papas by Qantas Joeys Head Coach Alistair Edwards as part of a 26-player squad for a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra from Friday 30th March until Sunday 1 April 2012.

Edwards and his Qantas Joeys assistant coach Tony Vidmar will be using their first training camp together as the first part of their preparation for the AFC U-16 Championship IR Iran 2012 which will be held in from 21 September to 6 October.

Edwards is very excited about working with this group of players for the first time.

“Over the past weeks I have been visiting National Training Centres around the country and have been very impressed by the quality of players within this age group,” he said.

“This camp will be the first opportunity for us to work together and to start bonding as a playing group.

“With the support of the AIS, this will be the first of regular training camps, which are paramount for us to be fully prepared by the time we get to the AFC U-16 Championship.

“The door is definitely still open for other players to be added to the squad, but it is now up to this group of players to take their opportunity and make a good impression.”

FNC sides to contest State Cup

March 21, 2012

The State Cup, Northern NSW Football’s statewide knockout competition, will get under way this weekend across the Northern Pool with Round 1 matches taking place on Saturday 24th March.

Northern Pool Round 1 fixtures, consisting of clubs from Northern NSW Football’s regional zone centres will see fixtures played at Junction Hill, Korora, Tamworth and Forster

The competing Far North Coast sides include Alstonville and District FC, Goonellabah FC and Lismore Workers FC.

This is the third year of the competition and this year’s State Cup has attracted 65 teams from clubs across Northern NSW, up from 56 teams in 2011.

Clubs will be competing for $10,000 in prizemoney.”

“This is an excellent turnout from clubs across Northern NSW for the 2012 State Cup,” Operations Manager for Northern NSW Football Alan Nisbet said.

“It reflects the keenness of clubs to participate in a competition of this nature and also the willingness of regional clubs in particular to take the opportunity to compete against metropolitan-based clubs and showcase the depth of talent in regional areas.”

Teams will contest Northern Pool matches before culminating in the State Cup Final on the 15th July at a venue to be determined.

A state knockout was first held in 1884 and encompassed only the southern corner of Northern NSW, along with Sydney and Central Coast teams. The first Northern NSW side to win the competition was Hamilton Athletic in 1887.

In 2010 the inaugural State Cup, however, represented the first statewide knockout competition to encompass all of Northern NSW’s seven member zones.

Day 1 at the FFA National Youth Championships for Boys

October 3, 2011

In a first for Northern NSW Football, the state is represented at the FFA National Youth Championships for Boys by two sides in both the Under 13s and Under 14s age divisions – Country and Metropolitan.

Northern NSW Country sides are made up of players from Northern NSW Football’s four Northern zones: Mid North Coast, North Coast, Far North Coast and Northern Inland, with Metropolitan players originating from the three Southern zones: Hunter Valley, Macquarie and Newcastle.

The 13 Boys sides both suffered defeat, with Northern NSW Country going down 2-0 to Tasmania and Northern NSW Metropolitan receiving a 6-0 beating from Queensland Metropolitan.

However, the Under 14 sides faired better than their younger Northern NSW counterparts. Northern NSW Metropolitan found themselves a goal down early in the second half, before Alex Tserapas retaliated just one minute later to equalise the score at 1-1 where it remained until full-time.

The Northern NSW Country Under 14 side was the only Northern side to claim victory on Day 1 of the Championships, holding on to defeat Tasmania 3-2. 1-0 behind after 14 minutes, a goal from Quinlan Cox and a brace courtesy of Sheldon O’Loughlan put the team 3-1 ahead at half-time. Tasmania scored the only second half goal, but were unable to equalise, leaving Northern NSW Country the winners.
