Far North Coast weekend surf report

July 25, 2008

The ocean is one big washing machine today, with strong onshore winds and swell coming from all over the place.

But things should improve as the weekend progresses.

The south-easters should swing to the south-west as the east coast low heads towards New Zealand, and the forecast is for west to south-westerlies by Sunday.

There should also be plenty of swell.

It looks like being a weekend of blustery onshores, with a rising swell but not the most favourable of conditions.

Today the swell is about 4 feet and lumpy but the forecast is for a spike to six to eight feet over the weekend.

The wind is forecast to blow from the south-east to east, so look to the really well-protected places like Byron Bay.

Marine weather:

  • Friday: S/SE 20/25 knots. Sea: 2/2.5 metres. Swell: S 1.5/2 metres increasing to 2.5 metres in far south during the evening.
  • Saturday: E/SE 18/23 knots decreasing to 13/18 knots later. Sea: 1.5/2.5 metres. Swell: S 2.5/3 metres decreasing to 2/2.5 metres.
  • Outlook Sunday: E/NE 5/15 knots.
  • Outlook Monday: NE 10/20 knots.

Should a pro surfing event be held at Lennox Point?

June 27, 2008

The hot local topic of holding a pro surfing event at Lennox Point, which is now part of the Lennox National Surfing Reserve, will be on the agenda when the North East Surfers Alliance holds information day from 10am at Pat Morton Lookout, Lennox Head, on Saturday, June 28.

Over the past month, the group has been collecting signatures on a petition to be lodged with Ballina Shire Council calling for a ban on all commercial surf contests at Lennox Point.

Ed Standfield, spokesman for the group, told this week’s Ballina Shire Advocate that several hundred signatures had already been collected.

The petition came about as surf company Rip Curl earlier this year proposed to hold a Search event at the Point next year.

There are beach breaks everywhere today, courtesy of a four-foot east to north-east swell.

The winds are variable, with this morning’s light offshore predicted to swing onshore later.

But the good news for the weekend is the forecast of south to south-west winds.

They’re predicted to get up to 30 knots, so that, combined with an east coast low, should ensure there’s swell over the next few days.

Marine weather:

  • Friday: NW/SW 5/10 knots. Local inshore SE/NE seabreezes 5/10 knots during the afternoon. Sea: about 1 metre, rising to 1.5/2 metres offshore during the evening. Swell: E/SE 1/1.5 metres.
  • Outlook Saturday: W/SW 13/18 knots, increasing to S/SW 20/30 knots during the evening. Sea: 1/2 metres, rising to 2/3 metres during the evening. Swell: E/SE 1.5/2 metres.
  • Outlook Sunday: S/SW 20/30 knots.
  • Outlook Monday: S/SW 10/20 knots.

Get the steamer out — winter is really kicking in this weekend.

The predicted offshore has kicked in, and the forecast for tomorrow is more of the same.

The only doubt for the weekend is the swell.

After a couple of days of northerlies, it’s barely two feet today.

Pleasant conditions today for the start of the All Girls competition at Lennox Head, but things look likely to change for the worse over this long weekend.

This morning there’s a relatively clean swell of four to five feet and a moderate offshore.

However, the outlook for Saturday is for south-west to southerly winds to 25 knots, swinging to the south-east on Sunday.

The protected headlands are likely to be the best spots.

There’s a howling onshore and the ocean is a mess.

Unfortunately, things will stay pretty much the same over the weekend, with east to south-easterly winds forecast.

Byron could be protected from the wind, if you can handle the crowds.

If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, read the open letter from the Lennox National Surfing Reserve Association.

They are asking for comment on the proposal by Rip Curl to hold a pro event at Lennox Point.

It’s an issue which has divided the local surfing community, so if you have an opinion, here’s an ideal opportunity to voice it.

Marine weather:

  • Friday: E/SE 15/20 knots in the south grading to 25/30 knots in the north. Sea: 1.5/2 metres in the south, 2.5/3 metres in the north. Swell: E 1.5/2 metres.
  • Outlook Saturday: E/SE 20/25 knots in the south, grading to 25/33 knots in the north. Sea: 2/3 metres reaching 3.5 metres in the north. Swell: E/NE 2/2.5 metres.
  • Outlook Sunday: E/SE 15/25 knots increasing to 25/35 knots in the north.
  • Outlook Monday: E/SE 25/35 knots.

There’s a decent five-foot swell this morning, but it’s a bit bumpy.

Conditions should settle down overnight, and with a south-wester forecast for tomorrow morning, there’s a good chance of waves for the weekend warriors.

Marine weather:

  • Today: S/SE 13/18 knots. Sea: 1.5/2 metres. Swell: S/SE about 2 metres.
  • Outlook Saturday: SW/SE 15/20 knots. Sea: 1/2 metres. Swell: S/SE 1.5/2 metres.
  • Outlook Sunday: SW/SE 10/15 knots.
  • Outlook Monday: S/SE 10/15 knots.

The winter pattern is really kicking in, with south-west to southerly winds, crisp, clear mornings and good waves.

The swell has hovered between three and six feet over the past week or so, and today it’s a solid four to five feet — big enough for the point breaks.

A high pressure system in southern Australia is expected to keep the wind from the south through until Monday, so things are looking good for the weekend.

Marine weather:

  • Today: S/SW 15/20 knots reaching 20/25 knots offshore at first. Sea: 1.5/2 metres. Swell: S 2/3 metres decreasing.
  • Saturday: SW/SE 10/15 knots reaching 15/20 knots offshore. Sea: 1/1.5 metres. Swell: S 1.5/2 metres.
  • Sunday: S/SE 10/20 knots. Outlook Monday: S/SE 10/20 knots.

How awesome is this shot, taken by Surfing Australia’s Steve Robertson?

It’s Anthony Walsh, of Lennox Head, surfing at the menacing Teahupoo break in Tahiti this week.

Anthony just missed out on winning the trials but confirmed his reputation as one very gutsy surfer.

On the local scene, there were some good waves earlier in the week, along with the usual crowds.

Unfortunately, an overnight northerly has made the swell bumpy, although it’s still a good four foot.

The winds are forecast to be north-west to west, tending south-west to south-east over the weekend.

There still should be the odd beach break or two around.

  • Marine weather:
  • W/NW 5/10 knots, tending NE/SE 5/10 knots during the afternoon. Sea: up to 1 metre. Swell: S/SE 1.5/2 metres.
  • Outlook Saturday: Variable 5/10 knots, tending SW/SE and increasing to 15/20 knots through the day. Sea: up to 1 metres, rising to 1/2 metres later. Swell: S/SE about 1.5 metres.
  • Outlook Sunday: S/SW 10/20 knots tending S/SE.
  • Outlook Monday: Variable 5/15 knots.
