Casino aged care services to get a $1.2m boost

Aged care services in Casino are in for a boost with the announcement that the Uniting Church will receive $1.287 million to construct a purpose-built ground floor dementia-specific day-care centre.
The service will be located within the grounds of the Casino Uniting Church complex.
It is one of nine new dementia day-care centres worth a total of $11.86 million which will be built across New South Wales, making life significantly easier for people with dementia, their families and their carers.
Federal Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot and NSW Minister for Ageing and Disability Services Kristina Keneally this week announced the nine new centres that will be jointly funded by the Federal and NSW governments under the Home and Community Care (HACC) program.
Lismore hosts Medibank junior tennis series

The Medibank Junior Development Series (JDS), the largest tennis tournament series for juniors in NSW, heads to Lismore this weekend.
Local junior tennis players will head to Lismore & District Tennis Association on Sunday May 4 to compete in the Lismore JDS event.
Encompassing over 80 round-robin tournaments throughout the year and an average of 100 participants at each event, the Medibank JDS provides junior players, particularly those in regional NSW, with an introduction to competition tennis and tournament play.
Players compete in age groups ranging from 10 years and under through to 21 years and under.
Tracey Knowland a finalist in Rural Women’s Award

Bangalow businesswoman Tracey Knowland, pictured, is a finalist in the national Rural Women’s Award after being named the New South Wales winner.
Tracey and her husband Stuart, both in their 40s, operate a wholesale production nursery supplying premium advanced trees and shrubs to the landscape and development industry across Australia.
The nursery, established in 2002, is located on their 14 hectare farm at Brooklet near Bangalow.
“Along with the business side of the nursery, Tracey is responsible for acres of mowing, works with Stuart in developing new Australian tree selections (with hopes for the export industry) and is on the organising committee of the Bangalow Business Women’s group,” an entry on the NSW Department of Primary Industries website says.
Johnny Raper a guest at Casino Beef Week

The Casino Beef Week committee is looking to rugby league legend John Raper to help re-establish its annual festival.
“Recently selected in the Australian league Team of the Century, and soon to be inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame, Raper, will be participating at the Country Energy Casino Beef Week
Festival 2008, which commences on May 27 and and continues through until June 3,” Casino Beef Week 2008 administrator and co-ordinator Alex Lubanski said.
“Johnny Raper will be involved in the celebration, as part of the promotional campaign to re-establish the Casino Beef Week Festival 2008 as a major regional community event.
Anthony Walsh goes close at Teahupoo

Lennox Head surfer Anthony Walsh fell just short of making the finals and repeating his great performance of last year at the Air Tahiti Nui Von Zipper Trials in Tahiti today.
However, Walsh continued to impress with his gutsy surfing in the barreling waves of Teahupoo.

Police from Ballina are seeking witnesses or information relating to a fire which occurred at Kingsford Smith Park, Ballina, to a shipping container between 9pm and 9.25pm on Monday night.
During the incident goods were damaged by fire and a mower was placed in the nearby lake.

Police have arrested and charged two 14-year-old males for stealing from motor vehicles, malicious damage and steal from dwelling after incidents in the Goonellabah area over the previous few days.
The pair were arrested at 11.40pm on Monday night.

Offenders have stolen an outboard motor and fuel tank valued at $2000 from a carport of a Patchs Beach Lane property some time up to 1.20pm on Monday afternoon.

Community Legal Centre gets funding boost

The Northern Rivers Community Legal Centre in Lismore will receive $73,000 under the Rudd Government’s $10 million funding boost for community legal centres in recognition of the valuable role they play in providing assistance to disadvantaged Australians.
Federal Member for Page Janelle Saffin says additional funding will allow the centre to increase its hours of service.
“As a result of the extra funding, disadvantaged members of the community, particularly those at risk of homelessness or those dealing with the consequences of family breakdown, will have better access to
legal assistance.,” Ms Saffin said.
Community legal centres provide valuable assistance in a range of matters including family law, tenancy issues, employment disputes, consumer credit and debt.
The Rudd Government has also allocated an extra one-off payment of $7 million for legal aid and $4.9 million in one-off funding for Aboriginal Legal Services.
Bushwalker found safe and well near Nimbin

A 50-year-old bushwalker has been found safe and well after a ground and air search for her near Nimbin.
The woman became separated from her daughter and husband while they were walking in the Nightcap National Park near Nimbin yesterday.
She was found just after 10am today after a search involving police, the SES, Ambulance and a helicopter.
The 50-year-old woman left Mt Nardi on April 25 for an overnight hike in the Nightcap National Park.
