Richmond Tweed Regional Library funding campaign mentioned in Federal Parliament
May 30, 2008
The Richmond Tweed Regional Library’s campaign for more funding was mentioned in Federal Parliament this week.
The Federal Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, took the opportunity to raise the issue of declining public library funding when she made a statement in Parliament.
Ms Saffin said she wanted to speak up for libraries because they are a rich community resource for learning, communications and information.
In calling for a better funding deal for libraries, Ms Saffin also said she didn’t understand why libraries came under the sport and recreation portfolio when, to her way of thinking, they should come under education.

Grafton Ghosts, Rhinos clash in Clarence local derby
May 30, 2008
The spotlight focuses on Grafton this weekend in Retravision Northern League, with Grafton Ghosts, leaders of the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League competition, taking on their new Clarence River rivals, the Grafton Rhinos.
The Rhinos are something of a ‘reincarnation’ of the South Grafton Rebels.
They say on their website: “The formation was the result of a joint committee being formed in 2006, by the South Grafton Rebels and the Grafton Ghosts, to investigate the possibility of one club from Grafton being formed.
“The findings of this committee were presented to both clubs and unfortunately there was no resolution to this matter.

Far North Coaster weekend surf report
May 30, 2008
There’s a howling onshore and the ocean is a mess.
Unfortunately, things will stay pretty much the same over the weekend, with east to south-easterly winds forecast.
Byron could be protected from the wind, if you can handle the crowds.
If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, read the open letter from the Lennox National Surfing Reserve Association.
They are asking for comment on the proposal by Rip Curl to hold a pro event at Lennox Point.
It’s an issue which has divided the local surfing community, so if you have an opinion, here’s an ideal opportunity to voice it.

The days of cane fires are numbered
May 29, 2008
They’re spectacular sights but their days (and nights) are numbered: The era of burning sugar cane before harvesting is coming to an end.
New South Wales Sugar has announced that cane growers in the Broadwater and Condong mill areas will light fewer fires this crushing season as the industry continues to collect trash for its cogeneration plants.
Fires have been used before and after harvest for decades to reduce leaf matter, or trash, taken to the mill or left in the paddock.
30-Megawatt cogeneration plants at Condong and Broadwater will use the trash and bagasse, a fibre left after crushing, to create renewable electricity for the national grid from this season.
