Schools get $2.05 million in funding

May 31, 2009

Federal MP Janelle Saffin says 27 local schools in the Page electorate will receive $2.05 million for minor infrastructure and refurbishment projects under Round Two of the National School Pride (NSP) program.

Ms Saffin said the $1.3-billion NSP program was one of three elements of the Rudd Government’s $14.7-billion Building the Education Revolution (BER) and will deliver much-needed funding for school infrastructure projects and, importantly, support local jobs.

“One of the things I love about my job is getting around to our primary and secondary schools and meeting with students and school communities. Principals, teachers, P&Cs, P&Fs and school forums see School Pride as a golden opportunity to get long-overdue work done,” Ms Saffin said.

Most of the 27 schools in Round 2 will receive $50,000 or $75,000 for refurbishment that includes painting, floor coverings, repairs to walls, floors, fittings, roofs, stormwater components and paved areas.

Some have larger refurbishment projects due to their size. They include Westlawn Public School in Grafton $200,000; Yamba Public School $150,000; Wollongbar Public School $125,000; St John’s College Woodlawn in Lismore $200,000.

Ms Saffin said construction and refurbishment work will start as soon as possible. Round Two is the final round of the NSP program and sees funding delivered to all eligible schools across the country.

BER continues with two elements still open for applications – Primary Schools for the 21st Century Round Two and Three and Science and Language Centres for the 21st Century.

A list of successful schools and their planned projects are available at: www.buildingtheeducationrevolution.gov.au or at: www.economicstimulusplan.gov.au

Cockatoos round up Blue Heelers

May 31, 2009

The NSW Country Cockatoos have taken out the first leg of the Battle of the Borders with a record-breaking 51–21 rugby union victory over the Queensland Country Blue Heelers in Lismore.

The match was highlighted by a 36-point scoring haul by Winger David Kennedy, who crossed for four tries and kicked five conversions and two penalty goals.

After a slow start which saw NSW Country go to the break leading 11–7, the Cockatoos in the second half scored a point a minute to completely dominate the Blue Heelers.

The first half was a stop-start affair with neither side able to take control, and with both sides crossing for a try it was the boot of Dave Kennedy which saw the Cockatoos go to the break with the lead.

Horticulturists to be eligible for wind damage compensation

May 29, 2009

In an unprecedented win, Page MP Janelle Saffin has successfully lobbied for the North Coast’s horticultural industry to be able to claim losses from wind damage under Commonwealth-State flood assistance grants.

Ms Saffin moved quickly on Thursday night to ensure that hundreds of primary producers in the macadamia, garden and nursery, blueberry, banana, coffee, stonefruit, lychee and custard apple industries were not shut out of the clean-up and restoration grants of up to $15,000.

“Jolyon Burnett, the Lismore-based Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Macadamia Society, contacted my office as soon as he became aware that the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements criteria had not included the flood-related wind damage,” she said.

“Dunoon macadamia farmer Greg Woods, who is one of our wonderful State Emergency Services volunteers, also alerted me to the problem. I immediately contacted New South Wales Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald to get an urgent review of the arrangements and kept the Attorney-General Robert McClelland informed as well.

Lismore hosts rugby’s Battle of the Borders

May 29, 2009

The first match in the Battle of the Borders takes place this weekend between the New South Wales Country Cockatoos and the Queensland Country Blue Heelers.

The match will be played on Saturday at Crozier Oval, Lismore kicking off at 5pm, and will be preceded by a series of matches involving the Coolangatta Tweed and Wollongbar Alstonville.

The Battle of the Borders dates back to the mid-nineties when New South Wales Country played an annual match against Queensland, but the introduction of professional rugby saw the demise of the fixture.

With the ARU suspending the Australian Rugby Shield in 2009, the NSW and Queensland Country Rugby Unions have reintroduced the Battle of the Borders as part of their respective representative programs in 2009.
