Tweed nominees selected for Northern Region Joint Regional Planning Panel

An Extraordinary Meeting of Tweed Shire Council this afternoon has selected academic Dr Ned Wales and barrister Robert Quirk as the Tweed Shire Council nominees for the Northern Region for the new Joint Regional Planning Panels (JRPP).

Development Manager Steven Grimes has been selected as the alternative nominee.

Six JRPPs will be established throughout regional and metropolitan areas of NSW. Tweed Shire Council was required to nominate two members for the Northern Region JRPP as well as an alternative member should a council nominee become unavailable.

Director of Planning and Regulation Vince Connell said the objective of the JRPPs was to create a panel of people with appropriate expertise to determine development proposals of regional significance.

Dr Ned Wales

Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at Bond University’s School of Sustainable Development. Lives at Tweed Heads.

He attended Murwillumbah High School, then left for the United States where he went to university and had an extensive career in urban planning.

Returned to Australia in 2000. He has also worked in local government (Gold Coast City Council).

Robert Quirk

Barrister-at-law with chambers in Brisbane. A major part of the practice is environmental and planning law.

Lives at Terranora.

Attended Murwillumbah High School and had extensive community involvement through the Cudgen Headland Surf Lifesaving Club, Murwillumbah Pony Club and Tweed Heads Swimming Club.

He was Tweed District Sportsperson of the Year in the mid-1980s.

Son of well-known Tweed cane farmer Robert Quirk.

Steven Grimes (alternative member)

Development Manager with the Urban Land Development Authority, a Queensland State Government Authority established to assist government bodies dispose of excess land parcels.

He has lived at Casuarina for the past four years.

Regional junior surfing teams announced

fantastic_fnc_14boys4fc12dThe third and final round of the Fantastic Noodles Far North Coast Regional Junior Surfing Titles went off at Cabarita last weekend, with the Far North Coast team decided for the Arnette NSW Junior Titles.

With precious places at the Arnette NSW Junior Titles up for grabs, the region’s best junior stars were on tenterhooks before the opening heat at Cabarita, all wanting to the opportunity to represent their region at Forster in July.

Greeted with excellent two to three foot peaks, light offshore winds and a handful of tomorrow’s stars, the action that transpired was of the highest order.

When the smoke cleared it was Michael Wright (Lennox Head, NSW), Tommy Boucault (Ocean Shores, NSW) and Mitchell James (Kingscliff, NSW) who were left standing on the dais.

Police divers locate body at Tweed Heads

About 11:30am today, police divers assisting with the search of a missing pregnant woman, located the body of a woman at a Tweed Marina.

Police divers from Sydney attended the Tweed marina this morning, following the report of a pregnant 37-year-old woman having gone missing from the marina.

The body is yet to be formally identified and a post mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of her death.

Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner and investigations are continuing.

Police divers to join search for missing pregnant woman at Tweed Heads

Police divers will today join the search for a missing pregnant woman at Tweed Heads.

The 37-year-old woman, who is six months pregnant, was last seen by her husband about 11.30 on Saturday night (27 June) leaving her boat which was moored at a hotel’s marina on Wharf Street.

Officers believe she exited the wharf through a security gate leading to the public car park area, and intended using toilet facilities located at the front of the hotel.

Police conducted an extensive search of the area yesterday and will this morning be joined by police divers from Sydney.

Mullumbimby beats Byron Bay; Lower Clarence surprise losers

A convincing win to Mullumbimby Giants over premiers Byron Bay, and a shock loss by NRRRL competition leaders Lower Clarence were the highlights of this weekend’s Round 10 games in Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League.

Mullumbimby won the Battle of Byron Shire 24-8 at Mullumbimby today and now share equal third spot with Byron and Grafton Ghosts. The Giants have a match in hand, against Northern United.

Lower Clarence lost 38-20 to Ballina Seagulls at Ballina on Saturday night and now have been joined on top of the table by Northern United, who narrowly beat Kyogle 34-32 at Kyogle today.

Other winners over the weekend were Lismore Marist Brothers, Evans Head — who scored their second successive win — Grafton Ghosts and Cudgen.

Byron Bay Surf Lifesaving Club wins Far North Coast award

slsfnc-01Byron Bay SLSC has taken out the Newcastle Permanent Surf Life Saving Far North Coast Club of the Year at the branche’s Awards of Excellence.

The club was awarded the prize based on their initiatives and dedication within all areas of Surf Lifesaving.

The ceremony held in Yamba concluded an extremely successful season for the Far North Coast Branch, president John Beasley said.

“The Annual Awards of Excellence gave us an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding efforts of members throughout the past season,” he said.

tanynLennox Head’s Tanyn Lyndon and Byron Bay’s Shannon Hulbert Green were acknowledged for their excellence, receiving the NRMA Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards.

Quota’s annual Art & Craft Fair to be held in Alstonville on August 29-30

Quota International of Alstonville-Wollongbar’s annual Art & Craft fair is on again on August 29 and 30 at the Alstonville Leisure and Entertainment Centre.

This is the premier fundraiser for Quota International of Alstonville-Wollongbar and all proceeds assist local charities and Quota projects.

Over $90,000 has been distributed to groups in need over the past six years.

The Quota ladies are busy putting together this event and have again managed to find the best craft people with the newest and most exciting products to sell. 

“Local and interstate craft people believe that this is the best opportunity to display their quality wares. The Quota Craft Fair is recognised as the one of the premium events in the Northern Rivers,” organisers said.

Tweed Heads police appeal for help to locate missing pregnant woman

Police from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command are appealing for help to locate a pregnant woman, missing from Tweed Heads.

The 37-year-old woman, who is six months pregnant, was last seen by her husband about 11.30 last night (Saturday 27 June) leaving her boat which was moored at a hotel’s marina on Wharf Street.

Officers believe she exited the wharf through a security gate leading to the public car park area, and intended using toilet facilities located at the front of the hotel.

Police are currently carrying out an extensive search of the area, including canvassing for witnesses and deploying police divers to check surrounding waters.
