Tweed police find hidden hydro cannabis crop worth $2m

Police from the Tweed/Byron proactive Target Action Group (TAG) today seized hydroponic cannabis crop with a potential street value of $2 million which was hidden in an underground bunker.
As part of an ongoing investigation targeting drug offences, Tweed/Byron LAC police swooped on the 40-hectare property on Cadaga Road, Fernvale, near Murwillumbah, about 7.30am today.
Police will allege that on the property they located two buried shipping containers full of hydroponic cannabis plants, ranging from 15-30cm in height.
It is alleged that up to 380 plants were found, as well as about 100g of cannabis resin and 200g of cannabis leaf.

Creative professionals living in the Clarence Valley are invited to attend a free Clarence Creative workshop during April’s Clarence cultural month, honouring the area’s diversity, lifestyle and culture.
To celebrate the month, the Clarence Valley Council is calling on creative residents, from architects to potters, sculptors to rug makers, designers to performers and everyone in between, to attend a free workshop in Yamba or Grafton on “Top Ten Creative Business Tips”.

Detectives appeal for information after body found in house fire

Tweed Heads and Homicide Squad detectives have formed a strike force to investigate the death of a man whose charred remains were found in a house fire last week.
The severely burnt body of a man – who has yet to be formally identified – was found by police who attended a house fire in Urliup Road, Tweed Heads, early last Friday (March 26).
The house was destroyed by the fire and it has yet to be determined whether the fire was accidental or deliberately lit.
When police and fire brigades attended the scene at 6.30am, the house was well alight.
Police investigate suspicious fatal house fire at Bilambil

Police are continuing their investigations into a fatal house fire which occurred last Friday (26 March 2010).
About 6.30am, emergency services were called to a rural property in Urliup Road, Bilambil, where a house and adjoining caravan were located on fire.
NSW Rural Fire Service officers were unable to extinguish the blaze and both the house and caravan were completely destroyed.
During an examination of the scene by forensic police the remains of a human body were located.
Stuart Kennedy scores his biggest career win

Lennox Head surfer Stuart Kennedy won the biggest event of his emerging career in Tasmania today, taking out the prestigious Association of Surfing Professionals 6-Star Rated O’Neill Cold Water Classic.
Twenty-year-old Kennedy is on his first serious year as an ASP World Qualifying Series competitor and the former Australasian Pro Junior Champion of 2008 could not have dreamed of such a win so early in his season.
RTA rules against Bangalow southern bypass

The RTA has announced the proposed Bangalow southern bypass will not proceed.
A spokesperson for the RTA said the decision was made following research that showed the bypass would not be economically viable and would result in only minor improvements to the regional road network.
“This decision was not taken lightly but unfortunately the RTA could not justify the cost of the project in light of the minor benefits it would have achieved,” the RTA spokesperson said.
A discussion paper concerning the preliminary investigations into a southern bypass of Bangalow went on display for community comment from 3 June to 15 July 2009.

Lismore’s homeless given a helping hand

Minister for Housing Tanya Plibersek and Member for Page Janelle Saffin today toured the Lismore Homeless Shelter.
Delivering on an election commitment to provide a homeless shelter in Lismore, the Australian Government provided $200,000 for the purchase and construction of the shelter in June 2009.
The shelter, which is operated by the Lismore Soup Kitchen with support from Lismore City Council and St Vincent de Paul, opened its doors in November.
It provides accommodation and meals people in Lismore who are doing it tough.
Ramada owners explain change-of-use decision

The 10 local families who built the Ramada Hotel & Suites Ballina Byron and collectively own 85 of the 115 rooms at the hotel have spoken in defence of the application for extension of use.
“In keeping with Ballina’s award-winning Town Centre Development Control Plan, we are applying to extend the use of 94 of the 115 rooms to allow for residential use as well as tourist use,” said Bryan Marriott, Company Secretary of Slipway Properties Pty Ltd, the developer of the hotel.
