New drug unit raids cannabis crop – Murwillumbah

Police have arrested a couple and seized dozens of cannabis plants during a raid on a property at Mount Burrell, via Murwillumbah.
Just before 7pm yesterday (Thursday 29 April), Murwillumbah police served a court order at the Cadell Road address in relation to a child.
Upon entering the home, a bus and lean-to, police located a quantity of cannabis in plastic bags.
Detectives from the recently formed Tweed/Byron Drug Unit were notified and executed a search warrant at the property.

Mandy from Dave’s Bait Shop in Ballina says the flatties are still going quite well in the river up to Wardell and the bream are coming on in the lower river around the rock walls in the Town Reach.
Crabs are getting a bit scarcer up the creeks but there are still a few.
Mackerel are still the flavour of the month outside, with Riordans and Lennox Point going well, while there have been some snapper and pearlies on the wider reefs.
The odd nice tailor has been coming from the beaches and headlands, with some decent jewfish also being encountered around the schools of moving mullet.

Man’s body identified after house fire at Bilambil

Police have formally identified the body of a man located after a house fire at Bilambil last month.
The body of 50-year-old Luke Ogilvie was found by police inside a home on Urliup Road at Bilambil on Friday 26 March.
About 6.30am police and emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a house fire.
Upon arrival the house was found to be well alight.
Man arrested over alleged home invasion and assault – East Ballina

A man will appear in court next month charged over an alleged home invasion and assault at East Ballina yesterday morning.
About 5.50am (Tuesday 27 April) a 43-year-old man attended a home in Barwen Street, East Ballina, and knocked on the front door.
It is alleged when the door was answered by the female occupant, the man forced his way inside the unit before attending one of the bedrooms.
Inside the bedroom the man allegedly assaulted a 44-year-old man who was asleep by hitting him over the head with a large piece of wood.
NRRRL launches its season

Rainbow Dragons Abreast, the Men of League Foundation and Grafton Ghosts were the big winners as the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League launched its season in style at the Ballina RSL Club on Friday night.
Men of League and Dragons Abreast were presented with donations, proceeds from the inaugural Ballina RSL Charity Shield pre-season competition.
On hand to accept the cheques were Men of League Foundation national vice-president Jim Hall and Veda Dorrough from Rainbow Dragons Abreast.
Surfing legend Shorty Connors honoured at Lennox Point

Ron ‘Shorty’ Connors was ‘no different to the boys and girls of today — he loved his surfing, especially at the Point’.
Those words came from Shorty’s dad Cyril at the opening of the Ron ‘Shorty’ Connors Memorial Stairs at Lennox Point on Saturday.

A major response to Myna problem

Residents of Tweed and Byron shires have trapped more than 2000 feral Indian Myna birds in the past 20 months.
Myna Control Project Officer for the two councils, Pamela Gray, said the result was testament to the increasing trapping skills and dedication of the community.
