Australia’s World Rally Championship relocates to Coffs Harbour

September 29, 2010

Rally Australia, Australia’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), will relocate to Coffs Harbour from 2011.

Coffs Coast has played a major role in Australian rally history, hosting many competitive stages of the famous International Southern Cross Rally in the 1960s and 1970s and more recently, regularly hosting a round of the Australian Rally Championship.

Saffin condemns Telstra decision to close Grafton Call Centre

Page MP Janelle Saffin said Telstra Business has today shown its contempt for its employees and for regional Australia with its decision to close the Grafton Call Centre on November 23.

Ms Saffin said with this move Telstra missed an opportunity to turn around public opinion and show it can be a good corporate citizen.

“By ignoring the unprecedented local campaign to save the local Telstra jobs, Telstra has made it pretty clear how much it values us here in the regions,” she said.

“The organisation has chosen to ignore its employees, the union, the Mayor and State and Federal representatives and about 6000 local people who signed a petition asking to keep the centre open.

Cyclist dies at South Ballina

September 28, 2010

Police are investigating after the death of a cyclist at South Ballina yesterday.
 
About 8.15pm, a 49-year-old man was located lying on sand at the edge of a driveway leading into a holiday park on Ballina Beach Road, South Ballina.
 
He was found to be entangled in a mountain bike. An ambulance was called, however, the man was found to be deceased.
 
The man appeared to have no significant bodily injuries and there appears to be no suspicious circumstances at this time, police said.

Missing woman located – Nymboida

September 28, 2010

A woman missing from a rural property in the Clarence region since yesterday has been found safe and well.

The 67-year-old woman was reported missing from her home on a 75-acre property at Nymboida late yesterday afternoon and police commenced a search in nearby bushland, to no avail.

That search resumed about 7am today and the woman was found safe and well a short time later on a nearby roadway. She has been reunited with her family.

No further police action is required.

Man killed in single vehicle crash – Cangai

September 28, 2010

Police attached to the Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command are examining the cause of a fatal single-vehicle crash at Cangai yesterday afternoon.

About 3.30pm a Ford Falcon sedan was travelling west along the Gwydir Highway, just past of the Diggers Creek overpass. It appears the driver lost control of the car, veering off the road and careering up an embankment, before rolling back onto the roadway.

The driver, a 48-year-old man, died at the scene.

Police attended and a crime scene was established.

Search for missing woman – Nymboida

September 28, 2010

A search is resuming this morning for a woman missing from a rural property in the Clarence region since yesterday.

Idalia Carvalho, 67, was reported missing from her home on a 75-acre property at Nymboida late yesterday afternoon.

There are concerns for Idalia’s welfare as she suffers a medical condition and may not be aware of her surroundings.

Police commenced a search in nearby bushland yesterday to no avail.

Boys National football championships begin at Coffs Harbour

September 27, 2010

Australia’s most prestigious junior football tournament for boys gets under way in Coffs Harbour tomorrow, September 28, with Day 1 of the FFA Boys National Youth Championships.

The tournament has been hosted by Northern NSW Football at the Coffs Harbour facility since 2006. The Westfield National Youth Championships For Girls was hosted at the stadium earlier in the year.

Over 380 of Australia’s best young footballers in the Under-14 and Under-15 divisions will converge on BCU International Stadium at Coffs Harbour for the tournament.

Twenty-four teams from around Australia will contest the two age divisions, with 12 teams in each age division.
