Man charged over alleged attempted armed robbery – Casino

A man will appear in court today following an alleged attempted armed robbery at a supermarket in Casino earlier this month.
About 6pm on Friday 8 April, a man entered the supermarket on Centre Street, Casino, allegedly armed with a screwdriver.
It is alleged the man threatened a 61-year-old female employee and demanded cash, however, she refused and the man left the store empty-handed.
Officers attached to Richmond Local Area Command have been investigating the incident.

Six of the country’s top wine makers are on a surfing road trip and they’re heading this way.
Known as “The New Generation Hunter Valley”, the fellas, who are said to represent the new breed of wine maker, are surfing their way up the east coast and stopping off to demonstrate the sexiness of Hunter Valley Wines, semillon and shiraz in particular.
Besides getting in as much surfing as they can, the young guns will preside over tastings and dinners in nine select locations from Melbourne to Noosa.
“Not Your Usual Caravan of Courage” is the name given to the expedition, which involves David Hook (David Hook Wines), Andrew Thomas (Thomas Wines), Rhys Eather (Meerea Park), Nick Paterson (Mistletoe Wines), Mike De Iuliis (De Iuliis Wines) and Andrew Margan (Margan Family Wines).
Appeal to identify safe thief – Tweed Heads

Tweed Heads Police are appealing for public assistance relating to a break-in which occurred in the early hours of Friday 29 April 2011.
The break and enter occurred about 4am on a coffee shop at a shopping centre in Wharf Street, Tweed Heads.
Investigators believe that a male acted alone and broke in through the front door of the shop. Inside the shop he took a safe and contents.
Tweed/Byron Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Shane Diehm, said as the shop front was visible from the main street of Tweed Heads, he believed passers-by may have information vital to the investigation.
“The man has been described as wearing a long, dark pants, white runners and a black beanie,” he said.

Police targeting drugs and anti social behaviour at Nimbin Mardi Grass Festival

Police from the Richmond Local Area Command and the Northern Region will be out in force at this year’s Nimbin Mardi Grass Festival from Friday the 29th of April through to Monday the 2nd of April, 2011.
Around 100 General Duties, OSG, TAG, Licensing and Highway Patrol Officers from the Northern Region will be providing High Visibility Policing in and around the Nimbin township during the Mardi Grass Festival. The aim of police is to maintain a safe environment for the public without tolerating any illegal drug activity or anti-social behaviour.
Police are expecting large crowds to converge on the small village over the weekend, given numbers in previous years.
Police are reminding people attending the festival that the possession and sale of illicit drugs will not be tolerated and those detected will be dealt with under the law.
New three-bin waste service coming to Ballina Shire urban areas in July

All Ballina Shire urban residents will have a new garden and organics bin delivered in June as part of a new forward-thinking and sustainable waste service to commence on 4 July 2011.
This new service will include a weekly collection of garden and organic material, a fortnightly recycling service as per the current service, with any remaining waste to go in the old garbage bin, which will also be collected fortnightly.
Each week you will put out two bins with all residents to put the recycling bin out in the same week and the waste bin to be put out by all residents on the alternate week.
When the new bins are delivered you will get a comprehensive booklet which will assist you in managing your waste.
Five people charged following drug operation at Nimbin

Three men and two women have been arrested and charged following a five-month investigation into the illicit drug trade at Nimbin.
At 11.30am today, police from Richmond Local Area Command arrested the five in the main street of Nimbin and seized drugs, including cannabis cookies and leaf.
The arrests are the culmination of Operation Hurry, which was established last December to investigate people who might be involved in the ongoing supply of illicit substances to increasing numbers of tourists and backpackers visiting Nimbin.
Those arrested have been taken to Lismore Police Station and questioned by investigators.

· 44-year-old Nimbin man
· 44-year-old Nimbin woman
· 43-year-old Nimbin man
· 47-year-old Larnook man
Woman arrested over fatal stabbing at Goonellabah

A woman has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of a man at Goonellabah.
At 11am today, police were called to a home in Shearman Drive following reports a 43-year-old man had suffered two stab wounds.
When they arrived officers found the woman performing CPR but the man was pronounced deceased a short time later.
The woman, 32, was taken to Lismore Police Station where she is assisting with inquiries.
Three children – aged three, seven and 12 – were inside the home at the time of the incident and are currently in the care of relatives.
Strike Force McColl has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.

New health infrastructure funding for Page

Page MP Janelle Saffin today announced more than $157,000 in health infrastructure funding for St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Lismore.
Ms Saffin said local people can look forward to better access to health care with today’s announcement of funding under round five of the Australian Government’s National Rural and Remote Health Infrastructure Program (NRRHIP).
“The money will be used to purchase equipment to develop a Urological Centre of Excellence at St Vincent’s, to service the Lismore region,” she said.
The CEO of St Vincent’s, Bob Walsh, said he was delighted with the news of the grant that will be used to establish first Lithotripsy service for the North Coast, to treat public and private patients suffering from Renal Calculi.
