NSW team chosen to contest National Schools Surfing Championships
July 31, 2011
On an excellent opening day with light offshore winds and quality 1.5- 2m waves, the best High School Students in NSW kicked off a huge week of Surfing competition at Boomerang Beach south of Forster.
With impressive sets of waves rolling through at North Boomerang Beach over the two days of the School Surfing Championships (Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th July), the conditions were set for big scores and a platform for an outstanding surfing event.
“This event has been so much fun. It’s great to surf with my school friends and compete against other schools throughout NSW,” said Audrey Styme-Lane (pictured above) after Audrey and her twin sister Grace won the U/19 Girls MR Shield event.
Steve Watts (pictured), the President of School Surfing NSW, is pleased at how the School and Junior Titles had run together for the first time in 31 years, creating a 7-day event filled with top school and junior talent.
School Surfing NSW and Surfing NSW have formulated a successful plan for future state titles.
“The level of surfing continues to improve every year and this year the surfing was epic, with two fantastic days of School Surfing,”Steve said.
“Thank you to everyone who volunteered throughout the year to make this event happen, the teachers, parents/carers and principals have been amazing and many thanks to Surfing NSW who we have joined with us for the first time in 31 years.
“It has been a huge success.”
The winners from this event will respresent NSW in the Australian School Surfing Championships being held a Coffs Harbour in late November 2011.

Ballina the venue for National Broadband Network briefing for Page
July 30, 2011
Page MP Janelle Saffin has invited local people to hear from NBN Co Limited about its plans for rolling out the National Broadband Network (NBN) on the Northern Rivers region.
Ms Saffin, who last year successfully lobbied for early adoption of the network on the North Coast, will host a community NBN briefing at Ballina RSL Club on August 11.
Ms Saffin said NBN Co’s Community Relations Adviser Darren Rudd (pictured), who has extensive experience in global communications, would explain the economic and social benefits of super-fast broadband.
“Many businesses and individuals have contacted my offices in Lismore and Grafton, keen to take full advantage of the biggest nation-building project in Australia’s history,” Ms Saffin said.
“I lobbied hard with Southern Cross University, local government, business and the health sector to champion our submission in Canberra and Sydney for early adoption.
“And it was a real coup for our region last July when NBN Co CEO Mike Quigley announced Coffs Harbour as one of 19 second release sites.”
Ms Saffin said Coffs Harbour was selected on a range of technical criteria, and because of factors like the engagement of local government and the receptiveness of communities to broadband initiatives.
“NBN Co has identified Coffs is an area from which we can expect to see future rollout – extending and expanding the network – and my hope is that this will be to several centres in my electorate,” she said.
Ms Saffin also welcomed an agreement struck last month between NBN Co and Silcar Pty Ltd which enables NBN to prepare for the first large-scale deployment of optic fibre in New South Wales, including past premises in Coffs Harbour in the coming months.
Ms Saffin’s community briefing on NBN will be held in the Ballina RSL Club’s upstairs function room on Thursday, August 11, from 6.30pm. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning Ms Saffin’s Lismore Electorate Office on 0266 219 909 by midday, Friday, August 5.
Ms Saffin is also hosting a luncheon briefing in Grafton on August 11 to update stakeholders who were involved in the original early adoption campaign.

Mullumbimby property quarantined after Hendra virus horse death
July 28, 2011
A fifth horse has died from Hendra virus on the NSW North Coast, this time at a property near Mullumbimby, NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) confirmed today.
“The property has been quarantined and movement restrictions are in place for all horses and companion animals, including cats and dogs,” NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Ian Roth said.
“There are eight other horses on the quarantined property of which four are considered at risk. A horse in a separate paddock is showing signs of illness but has been initially tested negative for Hendra. The others are currently showing no signs of illness.
“There are three cats and two dogs on the property – all will be assessed in line with NSW DPI’s policy for companion animals.”

Child dies when all-terrain vehicle rolls – Far North Coast
July 25, 2011
Police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command will prepare a report for the Coroner into the death of a child on a property on the Far North Coast on Sunday afternoon, July 24.
Emergency services were called to the farm at Dulguigan, 10km north of Murwillumbah, shortly before 3pm, after a child was injured when a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rolled.
The boy’s father found the 11-year-old pinned under the ATV and attempted to revive him while police, NSW Ambulance Paramedics, and the Lifesaver Four helicopter were called to the property.
Paramedics continued efforts to resuscitate and stabilise the child, however, he died at the scene.
A report into the circumstances of the child’s death will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner.
Jack Evans Boat Harbour upgrade officially opened
July 24, 2011
Stage One of the upgrade of Jack Evans Boat Harbour at Tweed Heads was officially opened this morning, July 24, marking a milestone in a rejuvenation of the border precinct.
The officially opening was part of the Local Government Week activities, with a successful Family Fun Day at Jack Evans Boat Harbour adding to the celebrations.
Mayor of Tweed Councillor Kevin Skinner said the Jack Evans Boat Harbour revitalisation project had created a vibrant recreational and tourism centrepiece for Tweed Heads, which acts as a fitting gateway to the Tweed and New South Wales.
“The parklands now feature extensive boardwalks, modern park furniture and landscaping, with plenty of green space for picnics and passive recreation. Energy-efficient lighting around the harbour provides a spectacular night-time display, improves pedestrian safety and discourages vandalism,” Councillor Skinner said.
