Another horse dies of Hendra virus near Ballina
August 30, 2011
A tenth horse has died from the Hendra virus in New South Wales, bringing the total number of nationwide deaths this year to 21.
The horse died on Sunday morning at a property north of Ballina, the NSW Department of Primary Industries said.
It had been noticeably ill on Saturday and showed neurological changes including weakness and loss of balance.
NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Ian Roth said the property had been quarantined and the dead horse had been buried.

Two men rescued after trawler catches fire off Brooms Head
August 29, 2011
Two men have been rescued after their fishing trawler caught fire and sunk off the New South Wales Far North Coast.
Police said that the old timber-style vessel, ‘Wave Rider’, was four nautical miles east of Brooms Head near Angourie about 12.30am today (Monday 29 August 2011) when the blaze broke out in its engine room.
The two crew members tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames before abandoning ship.
The men, aged 18 and 45, were picked up a short time later by the trawler, ‘L-MARGO’, which was nearby.
They were uninjured in the incident.
The ‘Wave Rider’ later burnt to the waterline and sunk.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Bangalow restaurant Satiate among Australia’s best
August 25, 2011
Satiate in Bangalow has been named one of the leading regional restaurants in NSW for 2012 by the Australian Gourmet Traveller in the prestigious 2012 Australian Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide Awards held last night.
Member for Ballina Don Page congratulated Satiate, saying it was a tremendous achievement to be recognised by Australian Gourmet Traveller, one of Australia’s premier travel, food and dining magazines.
“Satiate has an outstanding reputation locally. The restaurant is also a valuable drawcard for visitors to our region, and being named in these awards adds further prestige to their already outstanding reputation,” Mr Page said.
Minister for Tourism, Hospitality, and Racing and the Arts, George Souris, said 46 of the top 100 restaurants in this year’s awards were won by NSW restaurants.
