Rex to begin Newcastle-Ballina flights

Regional Express (Rex) has announced that it will commence Newcastle to Sydney and Newcastle to Ballina/Byron services 7 days a week from Sunday, 30 October 2011.

Rex will provide three return services between Newcastle and Sydney Monday to Friday on a schedule that is convenient for the business traveller wanting to make a day-return trip, as well as those needing to connect on to Rex’s NSW regional network as well as other domestic/international flights.

Saturday and Sunday flights are also provided, making a total of 38 weekly flights between Newcastle and Sydney.

Rex will also commence a new daily return service between Newcastle and Ballina/Byron Bay.

A promotional fully-inclusive one-way web fare of $99 for both Newcastle to Sydney and Newcastle to Ballina will be available from service commencement until Feb 2012.

Rex said it sees substantial growth opportunity between Newcastle and Sydney as the route used to have 100,000 passengers annually, a far cry from today’s 30,000.

Ballina man to face court on assault, robbery charges

A Ballina man will face court today charged with robbery and assault offences.

About 5am yesterday (Thursday 29 September 2011), emergency services were called to a men’s shelter on Cherry Street, Ballina.

Police have been told that a man had just arrived home at the shelter when he was allegedly attacked by another resident.

It’s alleged that the victim was punched in the face and received cuts to his forearm from a fishing knife.

Police will also allege that the second man stole cash from the victim’s wallet.

A 30-year-old man was arrested and taken to Ballina Police Station.

He was subsequently charged with aggravated robbery, robbery armed with an offensive weapon, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man has been refused bail to reappear at Lismore Local Court today (30 September 2011).

Off-duty officer charged with drink-driving – Grafton

A police officer has been charged with traffic matters after allegedly failing to stop for a random breath test at Grafton yesterday.

About 4:50pm (Thursday 29 September 2011), police were performing random breath testing duties on the Pacific Highway near Grafton when a Honda Accord allegedly failed to stop at the RBT site.

Police conducted a search of the area and located the car stopped on Armidale Road.

The off-duty officer, a male leading senior constable from a specialist command, was spoken to and subjected to a breath test, returning a positive reading.

He was arrested and taken to Grafton Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis returning a reading of 0.128.

The officer was issued a court attendance notice for the offences of driving with mid-range PCA and failing to stop for RBT. He will appear in Grafton Local Court on Monday 7 November 2011.

His driver’s licence was also confiscated and suspended by police.

Police appeal for witnesses following glassing – Casino

September 29, 2011

Detectives from the Richmond Local Area Command are appealing for witnesses to a glassing attack that occurred in Casino last week.

About 1.15am, Saturday, 24 September, 2011, a 19-year-old man was attacked by a number of men using broken beer bottles as he walked along Centre Street.

The man suffered wounds to his upper body and had his left ear severely lacerated. He was treated at Lismore Hospital and later released.

Two men, aged 17 and 18, were also taken to hospital where they where treated for lacerations and concussion.

Murwillumbah man dies in accident at Maclean

September 25, 2011

A report will be prepared for the Coroner after the death of a man in a five-car crash at Maclean yesterday.

About 9.55am, a Toyota Kluger being driven by an 18-year-old man was travelling north on the Pacific Highway at Maclean.

Police said that investigations are continuing, however, it appears the Kluger crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and sideswiped a southbound Suzuki Swift being driven by a 52-year-old woman.

The Kluger then crashed into a 1928 Chevrolet hot rod being driven by a 48-year-old man, which was also travelling south and towing a trailer.

Newcastle Permanent State Championships for Girls Day 1 Results

24th September 2011: Teams from across Northern NSW’s seven member zones have converged on Coffs Harbour this weekend for the Newcastle Permanent Girls State Championships to be played at Coffs Harbour International Stadium.

Conducted across two age divisions, Under 12 and Under 14, the Championships will host the best junior female players from across Northern NSW in the three day tournament.

Over 200 players will contest the prestigious tournament, with teams from the Far North Coast, North Coast, Mid North Coast, Northern Inland, Macquarie, Newcastle and Hunter Valley zones participating.

Lennox Head landslip restoration to begin soon

Work is expected to start soon to repair the landslip at Lennox Point, where a section of The Coast Road collapsed during the heavy rain deluge in January 2011 when 50 metres of the eastern road embankment collapsed.

With no other option but to temporarily close the eastern lane, Ballina Shire Council engaged geotechnical engineers who deal with road subsidence issues to assess the damage before providing remediation options.

Mayor Cr Phillip Silver stated that “Council is mindful of the impact that this lengthy lane closure has had on motorists and their travel time.

“However, the decision on restoration hinged on geotechnical reports and getting the go-ahead from the Roads and Traffic Authority.

Bringing the regions together to fight cane toads and Indian mynas

An innovative project to stop the spread of cane toads and Indian mynas in northern New South Wales has been proposed by a group of Landcare networks, in one of the first collaborative projects of its kind for the region.

“We want to extend the good work that is already taking place across some parts of the region and have applied for a grant with the NSW Environmental Trust to employ three project officers to manage the project,” said Vice Chair of Richmond Landcare Inc and Chair of North Coast Regional Landcare Network, Neville Sloss.
