Girl dies after crash south of Ballina

Police are preparing a report for the information of the Coroner after a child died following a car crash south of Ballina yesterday afternoon.
The five-year-old girl suffered critical head injuries after being thrown from a Holden Barina when it left the Pacific Highway, near Broadwater, and hit a tree shortly before 3pm yesterday (26 December).
She was taken to Lismore Base Hospital where she died early this morning.
The driver of the car, a 49-year-old woman, from Melton in Victoria, escaped injury.
An eight-year-old boy, also from Melton, escaped with minor injuries, grazes and bruising. He has since been released from Lismore Base Hospital.
Both children were travelling in the back seat.
Lanes in both directions of the Pacific Highway were closed to allow the helicopter to land and remained closed for more than two hours while the scene was examined.
Officers attached to Ballina Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Child critical following single vehicle crash – Broadwater

A child is in a critical condition following a serious crash on the state’s Far North Coast.
About 2.55pm Monday, 26 December 2011, a black Holden Barina was travelling north on the Pacific Highway near Broadwater, when it crossed the southbound lanes and crashed into a tree.
Police from Richmond Local Area Command and emergency services attended the scene.
A five-year-old girl, a passenger in the Barina, was thrown from the vehicle on impact.
She was airlifted to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition.
The 49-year-old female driver and an eight-year-old boy were taken to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment.
Lanes in both directions of the Pacific Highway were closed to allow the helicopter to land and remained closed for more than two hours while investigations continued.
Officers attached to Ballina Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Double fatal – South Tweed Heads

Two people have died following a crash early this morning at South Tweed Heads.
About 1.20am (Sunday 25 December 2011), a white Nissan Pintara was travelling south on the Pacific Highway, South Tweed Heads, when it left the roadway and crashed into a steel guard rail.
The Nissan then crossed both lanes and crashed into a steel and concrete pillar of the Greenway Drive Overpass.
Police and emergency services were contacted and attended the scene.
The 49-year-old male driver suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.
The 50-year-old female passenger was removed from the vehicle and taken by NSW Ambulance Paramedics to Tweed Heads Hospital, where she later died.
A German Shepherd-cross puppy was located in the car and has been taken into police care.
Police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command and specialist forensics officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A man from Pottsville will face court after 25 horses were found dead near Glen Innes in northern NSW last weekend.
Shortly after 12.50pm on Saturday 16 December 2011, police from the New England Local Area Command received information about a large number of dead ponies.
Elderly woman dies after being hit by car – East Ballina

An elderly woman has died after she was hit by a car in East Ballina yesterday.
About 11am (Wednesday 22 December), an 80-year-old woman was hit by a blue coloured Toyota Corolla on Links Avenue.
Witnesses have said the woman ran onto the road to assist an animal and collided with the vehicle.
Paramedics treated the woman at the scene but she died in Lismore Base Hospital last night.
The 18-year-old male driver returned a negative breath test at the scene.
He was taken to Ballina Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests. He will be formally interviewed at a later stage.
The driver was not injured.

World Rally Championship and its impact on the Coffs Coast

The economic impact of the World Rally Championship on businesses on the Coffs Coast varied widely, according to Southern Cross University Postdoctoral Research Fellow Arianne Reis (pictured).
Dr Reis, attached to the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, was commissioned to do the study by the four councils in which the rally was conducted including Coffs Harbour, Clarence Valley, Bellingen and Nambucca shires.
Six-year-old girl dies in crash near Murwillumbah

A young girl died and her grandmother was seriously injured in a crash near Murwillumbah yesterday.
About 5.30pm (Monday 19 December 2011) a 62-year-old woman and her 6-year-old granddaughter were travelling west on the Kyogle Road at Dum Dum (near Murwillumbah).
As the vehicle approached a left-hand bend in the road it lost control and crashed into a tree.
Two cyclists that were riding past rendered assistance and managed to free the young girl from the car. By this time police and an off-duty nurse were on scene and commenced CPR.
She was taken by ambulance to Tweed Heads Hospital but sadly passed away.
Her grandmother was airlifted to hospital suffering serious leg injures.
Her injures are not considered life-threatening and she remains in a stable condition.
Police are appealing for the two cyclists who stopped and rendered assistance to contact Tweed/Byron Police on 6672 9499.

The Coast Road speed limit reduced to 80km/h

The speed limit on The Coast Road between Lennox Head and Ballina is being reduced to 80 kilometres an hour.
The NSW Government’s Roads and Maritime Service decided to reduce the speed limit from 100km/hour to 80km/hour in response to complaints and requests from residents.
Energy White Paper ‘a document for the last century’

The 100% Renewable Community Campaign has strongly condemned the Energy White Paper, released on Tuesday by Energy and Resources Minister Martin Ferguson, as a backward-looking document that ignores the benefits of renewable energy and locks Australia into a future of ever continuing power price rises.
“The White Paper is a document for the last century, unable to see that the world is investing strongly in renewables and that we will be left behind,” said Tony Gleeson, Ballina Climate Action Network (BCAN) and the 100% Renewable community campaign spokesperson.”
