Police arrests two men after seizing large amount of cannabis plants – Tenterfield

Police have charged two men after allegedly seizing cannabis plants worth more than $3 million from a property in the state’s north yesterday.

About 12.20pm (yesterday), police attached to the New England Target Action Group arrested a 49-year-old man and 48-year-old at a property on Eagle Creek Road near Tenterfield.

It is alleged that they had been under police surveillance since October 2011.

At the location where the men were arrested, 1339 cannabis plants were allegedly seized from four different crop locations within the property.

The plants ranged in size from 1 to 4 feet. Also located on the property was at a campsite where a structure used to dry the harvested cannabis.

Tweed volunteers have common goal in assisting impoverished Kenyans

A team of volunteers from a number of Tweed organisations are set to travel to Kenya to work to improve the lives of residents in a poor rural village.

As a volunteer for the Tweed Kenya Mentoring Program, Tweed Shire Council’s Senior Construction Engineer, Nigel Dobson, will work with Kenyans to rehabilitate the Gona Dam at Obambo Kadenge. This is a very poor area of rural Kenya, located some six to eight hours west of Nairobi.

Man charged after man assaulted in bus shelter – Murwillumbah

Police have charged a man following an alleged assault in Murwillumbah.

About 2.10pm yesterday (Wednesday 18 January 2012), a 37-year-old man allegedly had a verbal altercation with a 28-year-old man in a bus shelter in Brisbane Street.

It is alleged the 28-year-old man punched the other man to the face causing him to fall over.

The 28-year-old man continued to assault the other male, whilst he was on the ground, before running from the scene.

Police and NSW Ambulance Paramedics attended bus shelter and conveyed the injured man to Murwillumbah Hospital.

About 12.45pm on Thursday, 19 January 2012, police arrested the 28-year-old man after he presented at Tweed Hospital.

He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and subsequently charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent.

The man was refused bail to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court tomorrow.

The 37-year-old man is currently in a critical condition at Gold Coast Hospital.

Man dies in two vehicle crash – Binna Burra

January 18, 2012

Police are appealing for information after a fatal two-car collision in the state’s north.

About 5.55pm Tuesday 17 January 2012, emergency services were called to Bangalow Road near the intersection of Friday Hut Road at Binna Burra after a station wagon and Holden Statesman collided.

One male passenger in the station wagon died at the scene of the crash.

The male driver of the wagon has received serious injuries and was airlifted from the scene by helicopter.

He will undergo further treatment at Lismore Base Hospital.

The female driver of the Holden Statesman has been taken by road ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital. She is understood to be in a serious condition.

Police attached to Ballina Crash Investigation Unit will continue inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the crash.

Malfunction gets $5000 government grant

Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham Annesley has announced a NSW Government grant of $5000 for the 2012 Malfunction Surf Festival which will be held from 21–25 March at Kingscliff.

Mr Annesley said: “The NSW Government is proud to support the Malfunction Surf Festival, which has grown from a 3-day amateur event to a 5-day international surf festival attracting thousands of spectators and over 300 participants and officials.”

Malfunction promotes the sport of longboard surfing and provides a world-class experience for local competitors and officials.

As part of the ASP Longboard Qualifying Series for men and women, it provides opportunities for our local athletes to shine on the world stage

As well as showcasing outstanding sporting talent, the Malfunction Surf Festival features a range of surf culture activities including a vehicle rally, live music, movies, learn-to-surf lessons and a high-performance coaching clinic.

Mr Annesley said the $5000 grant was awarded through the NSW Government’s International Sporting Events Program.

Three female youths arrested following beach robbery – Yamba

January 15, 2012

Police have arrested and charged three female youths following a robbery at Yamba.

About 3.45pm yesterday (Saturday 14 January 2012), two Sydney women were sunbaking on Pippi Beach in Yamba when they were approached by three young people.

One of the youths, armed with a large stick, allegedly attacked one of the women, striking her on the back of the head and shoulders.

The youths then rummaged through the women’s bags, taking a wallet and cash, before running from the scene.

Police were contacted and immediately commenced a search for the youths.

Two youths, aged 15 and 12, and matching descriptions provided to police, were sighted on Robinson Street shortly after the search commenced. However, upon spotting police, the youths ran into a nearby golf course.

Police pursued them, arresting one in the golf course and the other at a property in Robinson Street a short time later.

The third youth, an 11-year-old, was arrested in nearby bushland.

All three young people were taken to Yamba Police Station.

The 15-year-old was charged with robbery whilst armed with an offensive weapon (in company), resisting arrest, breaching bail and having suspected stolen goods. She was refused bail to appear via video link at Parramatta Children’s Court today (Sunday 15 January 2012).

The 11-year-old and 12-year-old were charged with robbery whilst armed with an offensive weapon (in company). Both were granted conditional bail to appear before the Maclean Children’s Court on 14 February 2012.

Man arrested on historical child sexual assault offences

January 11, 2012

A man will reappear in court in March on charges relating to the alleged historical sexual assault of three male students at a high school in Sydney’s north.

On Tuesday, 10 January, 2012, a 61-year-old South Golden Beach man was arrested by Detectives from Northern Beaches Local Area Command assisted by Detectives from Tweed Byron Local Area Command.

The arrest follows a two-year investigation into allegations of child sexual assault when the man was a school teacher at a Northern Beaches secondary school.

The nine alleged offences occurred between 1984 and 1985 and involved three male victims. The offences he has been charged with involve three male victims.

Company fined over worker’s death at Rappville

A Far North Coast company has been fined $225,000 and ordered to pay WorkCover’s legal costs after a labourer was fatally injured when struck by a loader at Rappville.

Finray Pty Ltd provided extraction and transportation services for logs from dump sites to a local sawmill for processing.

Police officer charged with alleged indecent assault – Goonellabah

January 5, 2012

A male police officer has been charged following an alleged indecent assault in Goonellabah last year.

The constable, who is a serving officer attached to Northern Region, was served with a future court attendance notice today (Thursday 5 January 2012), charged with assault with act of indecency and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The charges relate to the alleged indecent assault of a woman at her home in Goonellabah on Saturday 5 November 2011.

He is due to appear in Lismore Local Court on Thursday 16 February 2012.

The officer’s duty status is under review.

Man charged after drug manufacturing equipment found in car – Brooms Head

January 5, 2012

A man has been arrested and charged after police located drug manufacturing equipment in a car at Brooms Head.

About 4:15pm, Tuesday 3 January 2012, police stopped a purple Daewoo Lanos near the intersection of Ocean and Boronia Streets following reports of a domestics dispute.

The 31-year-old driver was spoken to and subsequent checks revealed he was wanted on arrest warrants for drug-related matters.

Police conducted a search of the car where they allegedly located apparatus used for the manufacturing of prohibited drugs in the boot.

It is also alleged police located a small amount of amphetamines and cannabis inside the car.

The 31-year-old man was arrested and taken to Grafton Police Station.

He was charged with manufacture prohibited drug, possess prohibited drug, driving offences and two arrest warrants and refused bail.

A 33-year-old woman who was a passenger in the car was also arrested but later released without charge pending further investigations.
