Wollongbar woman on multiple fraud charges
May 30, 2012
Police have charged a woman with historical fraud and identity fraud offences in Lismore and Ballina.
The 58-year-old from Wollongbar was charged last Friday (25 May 2012) with 29 fraud-related offences and one count of hindering the discovery of evidence in a serious indictable offence.
It will be alleged the woman, who was employed as a conveyancing clerk, sourced the details of various clients and used this information to obtain credit cards in their name to make purchases.
The alleged offences took place between 2005 and 2011.
Police from Richmond Local Area Command conducted a complex investigation into the woman’s alleged fraudulent activities, with five victims having been identified to date.
She was granted bail and will appear in Lismore Local Court on 30 July 2012.

Charges laid after 87-year-old man attacked – Casino
May 27, 2012
A teenager is due to appear in Lismore Local Court charged over the alleged home invasion and assault of an elderly man at Casino last week.
The 87-year-old man was asleep in his home at Acacia Street, Casino, about 1.45am last Tuesday (22 May), when he woke and saw a youth allegedly smash a glass sliding door.
The teen allegedly knocked the man to the ground and held him, demanding money.
The alleged intruder was given cash and he ran from the house.
The elderly homeowner suffered bruising and cuts during the attack.
Acting on information, Casino Detectives arrested an 18-year-old man at a home in Macdougal Street, Casino, yesterday (26 May).
The youth was taken to Casino Police Station, where he was charged with one count of aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence with violence.
He was refused bail to appear in Lismore Local Court tomorrow (28 May).
Rainforest Rescue makes another Daintree purchase
May 27, 2012
Future generations of Australians will inherit a little more rainforest thanks to Rainforest Rescue’s recent purchase of its 16th Daintree Rainforest property on 17 May.
Rainforest Rescue CEO Kelvin Davies said the settlement of Lot 82 Rosewood Road in Cow Bay represents a milestone for the Daintree Buy Back and Protect Forever Project.
“Together with six other rainforest properties we have purchased, the addition of Lot 82 expands a vital rainforest corridor – the Baralba Corridor Nature Refuge”, he said.
“This corridor connects two isolated parts of the Daintree National Park World Heritage Area and is crucial for wildlife such as the Endangered Southern Cassowary.”
As well as being strategically located, Lot 82 Rosewood Road harbours amazing diversity; 135 species of plants grow on the block, among them some impressive canopy trees anchored to the ground by giant buttress roots.
“Lot 82 had building approval. It will now be protected forever. The rainforest will be looked after, not bulldozed for rural residential development,” said Mr Davies. Mr Davies accepts that people need to live somewhere but questions why, in a developed, environmentally-informed country like Australia, we continue to clear rainforest and build houses and infrastructure right in the middle of it.
Delicious Weekend in Byron
May 27, 2012
The Byron at Byron Resort and Spa has announced that top chef Martin Boetz (pictured) of Longrain Sydney and Melbourne will headline the Delicious Weekend Away, being held over the long weekend in June.
Boetz promises to bring energy and colour to Byron for the three day food and wine celebration.
Born in Germany, his passion for cooking was nurtured by some of the world’s greatest Chefs, including David Thompson (who now owns London’s Michelin starred Nahm) at Darley Street Thai and Sailors Thai.
Martin joins Bangalow-based pastry Chef extraordinaire Katrina Kanetani from hatted restaurant Town (formerly of The Pier and MG Garage Sydney, Asiate New York and Quo Vadis London), Valli Little and The Byron at Byron’s Gavin Hughes (formerly of Aqua Luna, The Bathers Pavilion and Aqua Dining Sydney, Inverlochy Castle Hotel and 1 Devonshire Gardens Scotland).
“There are lots of passionate producers growing fabulous Thai ingredients in the Byron region,” said Martin Boetz, “including turmeric, galangal and betel leaves that we use at Longrain and will celebrate over the course of the weekend.”
The weekend includes a cooking class with Valli Little, lunch at award-winning Newrybar restaurant Harvest, a visit to local farmers markets and a producers farm and a gala four-course dinner at The Byron at Byron Restaurant.
Guests will stay in the Byron at Byron Resort and Spa where they can unwind with yoga or spend time by the infinity pool.
Mick O’Regan chats with Bob McTavish
May 27, 2012
As a 12-year-old boy, surf industry pioneer Bob McTavish observed the life his father led.
A career “slave” to the Commonwealth Bank, his dad was overlooked for promotion after 21 years, so he packed up the family and took off for Darwin. “I went, right! There’s something wrong with the way this system functions,” Bob said.
“To me, the whole thing of school, career, wife, kids, mortgage, finally pay off your mortgage when you’re 65 and then have a brief retirement then drop dead, is a very suspicious way of living.”
Instead, seeing how “the system” absorbed the energies of his hardworking father, once Bob became a young man, he chose to “take retirement first, and pay the price later”.
He decided to be more selective about how to live his life, so focussed first on surfing, then on establishing a sometimes bumpy career to become a master craftsman of surfboards, with the company he founded producing surfboards non-stop since 1962.
Love is in the air in Tweed
May 27, 2012
Fame the Musical, directed by Annie Loctoki, may be a well-known movie and TV series about the gritty side of the theatre but it is actually full of romantic stories including a real-life romance which blossomed on the stage.
The show, being presented by the Tweed Theatre Company (TTC), has six main characters who all begin as freshman at the Performing Arts School in New York. The story weaves three love stories around these characters while in real life the TTC cast has its own love story.
Ensemble cast members, Lara Wilkinson, 16, and Guy Williams, 18, (both pictured), met two years ago. Guy is originally a hip hop dancer while Lara is an actor and singer with four major shows under her belt.
They met at an Arts Week concert where Guy was working as part of the sound crew backstage and Lara was performing. He was struck by her amazing voice and introduced himself. The rest is history.
“I got talked into the show by Lara but I’ve been a big supporter of hers for years. It is my first big production so it is great for Lara to be helping me,” said Guy.
