The Raga Dolls Quartet currently comprises of violinist and composer David Osborne, piano accordion virtuoso George Butrumlis, guitarist Kieren Ray and double bass player Marion Heckenberg.
They are a smaller version from Australia’s newest professional orchestra (Raga Dolls Salon Orchestra) and specialise in recreating the swirling sounds heard so often in the ballrooms of high society at the start of the last century: a dazzling mix of Viennese operetta, Gypsy Mazurkas, Argentinean tangos and the popular classics of the day.
Their most recent album ‘Night Falls’ has been hailed as ‘A true evocation of the hours of darkness; glittering nightlife, lullabies and the world of shadows’.
The Raga Dolls Quartet are renowned for their standard of musicianship, innovative repertoire, and most of all for the way they reflect the sights, sounds and culture of Melbourne – the city from which they come.
They feature an unconventional line-up including non-traditional instruments such as guitar and accordion, and perform their diverse repertoire under the direction of composer and violinist David Osborne.
The orchestra has made regular appearances in the Famous Spiegel Tent at Melbourne Festival time, large outdoor events in the Fitzroy Gardens and Melbourne Docklands and numerous performing arts centres in suburban Melbourne and country Victoria.
They have released two very popular CDs, both of which received almost unheard of 5 stars from Deborah Jones from the Weekend Australian. The esteemed Raga Dolls Quartet will be making their northern NSW debut at Mullumbimby Civic Centre on Friday 12th September.
