Responsible Service of Alcohol on the agenda

July 28, 2008

Frontline bar and security personnel from pubs and clubs in the Tweed-Byron and Richmond Local Area Commands will receive practical training in the responsible service of alcohol (RSA) and learn more about new liquor laws at a series of free workshops.

The NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing will stage RSA on the Frontline workshops for hotel, registered club and nightclub licensees and their staff at the following locations:

  • Club Banora, Banora Point, Tuesday 29 July, 6pm to 8pm
  • Lismore Workers Club, Wednesday 30 July, 6pm to 8pm
  • Casino Returned Servicemen’s Memorial Club, Thursday 31 July, 6pm to 8pm.

The RSA on the Frontline workshops will be presented by senior liquor inspectors as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to assist the liquor industry to reduce intoxication and alcohol-related anti-social behaviour in and around licensed venues.

Venues in these areas are among the first in the State to benefit from these new workshops which provide practical advice on commonsense measures to improve the operation of licensed venues,” the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing said.

The workshops include:

  • A plain-English explanation of the new Liquor Act including the expanded powers of the Director of Liquor and Gaming to deal with irresponsible licensed venues, and new offences and banning orders for unruly patrons;
  • Improving responsible service and consumption of alcohol by reducing the risks relating to overcrowding, irresponsible liquor promotions and high-alcohol products such as Ready to Drink beverages;
  • An interactive panel session where venue staff can test how good they are at detecting an intoxicated patron and taking steps to reduce risk and breaches of the law;
  • Showcasing best practices in licensed venues such as RSA marshals to monitor patrons and consumption levels, a 1800 hotline for surrounding residents to report alcohol-related incidents, and temporarily closing bars to hand out free bottles of water to patrons;
  • Keeping minors out of licensed venues by knowing how to spot a fake ID and using black light testing devices to check IDs.

Secretary managers and directors of local registered clubs will also be able to raise issues with the Director of Liquor and Gaming and learn more about the new liquor laws at a free Club Corporate Governance and Management Workshop.

The director will conduct the workshop at the Casino Returned Servicemen’s Memorial Club on Thursday (July 31) from 10am to 1pm to help local clubs improve management standards.
