For the third year running, Why Not Restaurant and Bar in Jonson Street, Byron Bay, open their doors to foster stand-up comedy in the Byron Shire.

Why Not Stand Up is the open mic club run by stand up comedian Mandy Nolan and is the place where she claims ‘talent finds it’s feet’.

“This is the only open mic club in the area, and this monthly performance offers new and emerging comics the chance to gain valuable stage time, for existing comics to try new ideas and for professionals to work alongside and mentor new talent,” Mandy said.

“Open Mic clubs are the heart and soul of creating a thriving comedy industry.

“The only way you get to be any good on stage is by getting up time and time again.

“It took me over 10 years to find my voice on stage.

“I was pretty awful at the start, but had a healthy self-delusion that kept me going.

“Fortunately, most of the comics who perform at the Why Not Open Mic are very much talents in their own right.

‘The amazing thing about an open mic club is that you can get to see comics as they start out.

“Imagine if you had been there when someone like Seinfield first started his career! You could say that you saw him when his tuna sandwich joke died.

“Those early audiences are what go on to help create memorable comedians.”

MC for the evening is Steve Allison, pictured.

“Steve has that rare gift of walking into a room and making everyone his mate,” Mandy said.

“He comes from a performing family and at the age of 6 was forced to spend hours juggling to impress his circus-schooled dad. He’d shout ‘until you do five balls I’m not letting you go to school!’

“It’s in his blood. Steve is most at home on a stage with a bunch of people waiting to be entertained. And entertained they will be.

“At Woodford Festival this year, Steve was without a doubt the strongest comic to hit the stage.”
