Federal Member for Page Janelle Saffin is holding public forum on climate change in Ballina this week to provide a local perspective on one of the biggest issues facing the Northern Rivers, Australia and the world.
The forum, ‘Climate Change: A Regional Perspective’, will be held in the Richmond Room, Regatta Avenue, at the rear of the Ballina Public Library, on Friday, November 21, from 5.30pm until 7.30pm.
Keynote speaker is Professor Jerry Vanclay, Head of the School of Environmental Science and Management at Southern Cross University.
Ms Saffin said this was an opportunity to hear this world-renowned expert on natural resource management and sustainability explain the possible implications of climate change for people living in the Northern Rivers.
“Professor Vanclay will discuss the Rudd Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Green Paper, which we released in July, and economist Professor Ross Garnaut’s Climate Change Review final report, released in late September,” she said.
“This is very timely because the Government’s White Paper on the final design of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme is due for release by the end of the year.”
Ms Saffin said her forum also would involve Sustain Northern Rivers, a coalition of 14 regional peak bodies, local councils, educational institutions and government departments planning to drive practical programs to prepare the region to meet the challenges of climate change.
