A 16-year-old boy is due to appear in Mullumbimby Children’s Court next month charged over a spate of graffiti incidents in the Tweed-Byron area.

Police have been investigating an increase in graffiti attacks on businesses, government properties and other organisations in the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command since May this year.

The investigation has focussed on attacks in Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby and Byron Bay.

As a result of police inquiries, 12 youths, aged between 13 and 17, have been arrested.

Eleven youths were dealt with under the Young Offenders Act; 10 were officially cautioned and one was dealt with under youth conferencing processes.

The 12th boy – a 16-year-old from Ocean Shores – has been charged with 31 counts of malicious damage.

He is due appear at Mullumbimby Children’s Court on 29 January 2009.
