Every school will benefit, says Saffin
February 3, 2009
The Member for Page, Janelle Saffin, says every school in Page will benefit from the Rudd Government’s $14.7 billion investment in schools facilities announced this week.
“This will be most welcome news for every one of the 99 schools across the electorate,” Ms Saffin said.
“On so many of my visits to schools I have had principals, teachers and parents raise issues about old run-down buildings, or growing schools needing new facilities, and now that much-needed building work and maintenance can go ahead.”
The Government’s investment package for schools-Building the Education Revolution, will commence in this financial year and will:
Build or upgrade large-scale infrastructure such as libraries and halls in every primary school, special school and K-12 school in Australia
Build around 500 new science laboratories and language learning centres in high schools with a demonstrated need for upgraded facilities
Provide up to $200,000 to every school for maintenance and renewal of school building and minor building works.
“This unprecedented level of investment in local schools will be a major boost for the local building industry with significant benefits to the local economy,” Ms Saffin said.
“This is also good news for our local communities, as a key requirement of the package is that major new or upgraded facilities in primary schools are made available for community use at no or low cost.
“For example, a new school hall in a local primary school could be an ideal facility for out-of-school hours care.”
Ms Saffin said this investment by the Rudd Government will not only support jobs, but by investing in the quality of education for our young people, it is also a down-payment on the long-term strength of the Australian economy.
