A man and a woman are in a critical condition in hospital after a fire destroyed the house they were living in at Goonellabah last night.

About 10.30pm on Friday, police attended a house in Milgate Place following reports of a fire.

Five people who were in the house at the time managed to escape before the fire took hold and destroyed the house.

The fire was later extinguished by officers from the NSW Fire Brigade.

A 35-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman were taken by ambulance to Lismore Base Hospital suffering from serious burns.

The pair was later airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital Burns Unit where they are listed as being in critical conditions.

Three other people who were in the house at the time, a 16-year-old girl, a 32-year-old man and a 35-year-old man, escaped the blaze uninjured.

Police established a crime scene at the house, with detectives and specialist forensic officers conducting examinations of the scene.

Investigators are waiting to interview the occupants of the house to establish the cause of the blaze.
