An assurance has been given to Cancer Council Regional Programs Co-ordinator Diana Fisher by Federal MP Janelle Saffin that the Integrated Cancer Treatment Centre in Lismore will be finished on time.

Ms Fisher said an operational Cancer Treatment Centre has been long-awaited in Northern Rivers.

“The construction, which was to have been commenced in 2007 originally, will be delivered by June 2010, according to Ms Saffin, and she has reassured me that she will be keeping her eye on progress,” Ms Fisher said.

“It is reassuring to know that so many people will be watching the progress of this centre and ensuring that not only is it built on time, but commences operation with the appropriate staff and equipment.

“Crucially important is the installation of the linear accelerator. The machine will provide treatment to people who may otherwise not have been able to access it.

“Cancer Council, regional advocates, and many other individuals and community groups have campaigned for radiotherapy in the Northern Rivers for nearly two years, gathering over 25,000 signatures on a petition.

“Janelle Saffin has reassured me that there is no chance of funding from the Federal Government being lost.

“People in Northern Rivers were alarmed when the possibility of Federal funding being withdrawn was stated as a possibility by the previous government’s Health Minister, Tony Abbot, if the building was not completed on time.”

State and Federal funding will be used for the project.

“It is good to know that we have our Federal MP for Page, Janelle Saffin, with her office in Lismore, able to keep her eye on the project to ensure it is on track,” Ms Fisher said.
