Police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command have charged a man with attempted murder following a violent assault which has left another man with critical head injuries.

Police will allege the 31-year-old man was punched and kicked before his head was ‘stomped-on’ by another man outside a hotel in Jonson Street shortly before 11pm on Saturday.

The injured man, from Pottsville, was taken to Byron Bay Hospital before being transferred to Tweed Heads Hospital, then onto the Gold Coast Hospital where he is being treated for critical head injuries. He has also sustained serious facial injuries.

Shortly before 4pm yesterday, a 27-year-old man presented himself to Byron Bay Police Station where he was charged with attempted murder, maliciously inflict grievous bodily harm with intent, and affray.

The man, from Ocean Shores, was refused bail and will appear in Lismore Local Court later today.
