NRMA calls for Pacific Highway upgrade to feature in Budget

April 1, 2009

NRMA Motoring & Services has outlined key NSW road projects that desperately need funding, including the upgrade of the Pacific Highway and more black-spot funding for the North Coast, in its submission to the Federal Budget.

NRMA President Wendy Machin said the current economic climate offered the Australian Government the perfect opportunity to complete the remaining two-thirds of the highway that is still unsafe.

“North Coast residents have waited long enough for the Pacific Highway to finally get upgraded,” Ms Machin said.

“The Australian Government needs to invest in major projects that will provide a much-needed boost to Australia’s largest economy and provide first-class infrastructure for future generations.

“If the Prime Minister and the Treasurer are going to spend in order to bolster the economy, then it should be on projects like the upgrade of the Pacific Highway that will have short-term and long-term benefits.

“By committing the resources to at least one of these major projects, the Government will create jobs and economic activity in NSW.”

The NRMA submission lists key road projects for the Government to fund including the construction of new motorways such as the M4 East, F6 Extension, F3 to M2/M7, and the Princes Highway.

Ms Machin said the Federal Budget should also include a serious commitment to address Australia’s long-term energy future.

“At the end of this economic downturn, regional powerhouses India and China will have a renewed thirst for oil and Australian motorists are likely to be exposed to petrol prices higher than we’ve ever seen for some time,” Ms Machin said.

“The United States has outlined its strategy to end North America’s dependence on foreign oil, our Government must release Australia’s plan.”
