Police are appealing for information following an assault in Ballina last night (Tuesday, April 7).

About 9.30pm a 20-year-old man was walking near the intersection of Moon and River Streets after having attended a local hotel, when he was allegedly confronted by a group of teenage males aged between 13 and 19 years old.

Police have been told that during the incident, the 20-year-old man was kicked and punched by members of the group, who also threw glass bottles at the man.

The man managed to escape but was allegedly chased along River Street, before being thrown through the glass window of a shop.

The 20-year-old then got away from the group of teenagers and sought refuge in a nearby RSL club before police and ambulance officers arrived.

The man was taken to Ballina Hospital for treatment, before being transferred to Lismore Base Hospital.

He is suffering large wounds to his left arm and his left thigh, as well as a number of cuts and abrasions to his head and body. He is expected to undergo surgery today.

Police attached to Richmond Local Area Command have begun their investigations into the incident and have spoken to a number of witnesses.
