Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was hit by a taxi at Byron Bay this morning.

About 3.20am, the 20-year-old man was walking along Ewingsdale Road when he was struck by a westbound taxi, approximately 100 metres east of Banksia Drive.

He was treated at the scene and taken to Tweed Heads Hospital with serious injuries.

The man from Gympie in Queensland remains in a stable condition.

Officers from the Ballina Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and have spoken with the 43-year-old male driver of the taxi.

They will also speak with a man who was a passenger in the taxi at the time of the collision.
