Off-duty police officer charged with assaulting Byron Bay policeman

May 26, 2009

A police officer has been charged with assault police after an incident in Byron Bay yesterday morning.

About 12:25am police were dealing with an intoxicated person on Jonson Street, Byron Bay, when it is alleged two men began hindering the officers.

One of the males was an off duty 38-year-old attached to a Local Area Command within the Southern Region. It is alleged the off duty Senior Constable grabbed one of the officers and as a result was pushed away.

The off duty officer then allegedly punched the policeman, from the Tweed/Byron Local Area Command, to the jaw.

As a result the off duty officer was later served a Field Court Attendance Notice for the offence of assault police in the execution of duty. He is expected to appear at Byron Bay Local Court on Fiday, 19 June 2009.
