Irish tourist Niall McDonough still missing at Byron Bay

June 15, 2009

Police in Byron Bay are appealing for public assistance to locate an Irishman missing for more than two days.

Niall McDonough, 30, was last seen by his girlfriend as he left a Middleton Street backpackers hostel to go for a walk about 9pm on Friday (12 June).

She raised the alarm when Mr McDonough failed to return.

Police from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command are conducting inquiries into the Irish National’s disappearance.

About 7.15am on Saturday (13 June), a member of the public located some of Mr McDonough’s personal belongings on a park bench near the Cape Byron Lighthouse.

A search of the headland and surrounding waterways was launched using local police, Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club and a rescue helicopter.

That search effort was widened yesterday (Sunday 14 June) with surf lifesavers on a jet ski, two inflatable rescue boats and a larger vessel sweeping the coastline from Brunswick Heads to Byron Bay. General duties police conducted foot patrols of all local beaches.

The search was called off with crews finding no trace of Mr McDonough.

Local police have contacted Mr McDonough’s family members overseas and it’s expected they will travel to Australia in coming days.

Police have renewed their appeal for public assistance as they continue their inquiries into Mr McDonough’s disappearance.

Mr McDonough’s been described as being of white/European appearance, 170cm tall with a thin build, shaved red hair and blue eyes. He was last seen bare-chested and wearing grey jeans with a Billabong belt and runners.

Police do hold concerns for his well-being as he suffers a medical condition that requires treatment.

Anyone who sees Mr McDonough or knows his current whereabouts is urged to contact Byron Bay Police Station via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
