A motorcyclist has died overnight, with police to prepare a report for the Coroner, following a two-vehicle crash near Casino.

About 5.15pm yesterday a Ford Fairlane towing a box trailer was travelling along Summerland Way, Fairy Hill.

A Honda CBR600 motorcycle, travelling in the same direction, crashed into the rear of the box trailer, resulting in the rider being thrown from his bike and onto the roadway.

The rider, a 35-year-old man from Kyogle, sustained serious upper body injuries and was treated at the scene before being airlifted to Lismore Base Hospital in a critical condition.

He died about 11.30pm. A post mortem examination is expected to be carried out in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the 76-year-old Stratheden man driving the Ford was taken to Casino District Hospital for assessment.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command and the Ballina Crash Investigation Unit carried out an examination of the site.

Both vehicles were seized and will undergo a mechanical and forensic examination while police inquiries into the crash continue. Information will be included in a report for the Coroner.
