Cr Warren Polglase is new Mayor of Tweed Shire
September 16, 2009
The Mayor of Tweed Shire for the period until September 2010 is Councillor Warren Polglase after an election yesterday at an Extraordinary Council Meeting.
The other nominee for the position was Councillor Barry Longland. The election was by an open ballot with a show of hands, with both councillors receiving three votes.
The former mayor, Cr Joan van Lieshout, abstained from the vote, and withdrew from the room while the Mayoral election was held.
Schedule 7 of the Local Government Regulation says where a vote is tied in an election for the position of Mayor or Deputy Mayor, a name is to be chosen by lot.
Both nominees’ names were placed in a box and Councillor Polglase’s name was drawn out first.
Councillor Polglase, of Kingscliff, was previously Mayor of Tweed Shire for two terms, from 2001 to 2004 and 2004 to 2005.
Councillor Polglase said he was looking forward to being Mayor of Tweed Shire once again.
“I just hope Council can come together and deliver good outcomes for the community,” Cr Polglase said.
There were two candidates for the position of Deputy Mayor – Councillor Phil Youngblutt and Councillor Barry Longland. The vote was again tied three-all after a show of hands, with Councillor van Lieshout once again abstaining and absent from the room.
Councillor Youngblutt, of Fernvale was declared Deputy Mayor after his name was drawn out first.
This is Councillor Youngblutt’s second term as a Tweed Shire Councillor. He was a member of the 2001-2004 Council.
Cr van Lieshout said it had been a privilege to serve as mayor and she would continue to work with the same zeal and commitment in her position as elected councillor.
