New Tweed Heads Skate Park already a big hit
September 20, 2009
Skate demonstrations to the sounds of hip hop music from some of the Tweed’s best talent were part of the celebrations yesterday (Saturday 19 September) when the Tweed Heads Skate Park was officially opened.
Shop team skaters from Concrete Lines at Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah’s Pharside put the new facility to the test, following the official opening by the Mayor of Tweed, Warren Polglase.
“It’s fantastic to see the kids all out here having fun in this modern facility which has all the elements which make skateboarding and BMX riding a challenge for them,” Councillor Polglase said.
“I’d like to thank all the government, business and community organisations and individuals who worked so hard for many years to get this project off the ground – it’s a credit to them all, and a credit to a community which values its young people.”
The official opening was attended by the Member for Richmond, Justine Elliot, and representatives from Tweed clubs. The Australian Government and the clubs contributed financially to the project, along with Tweed Shire Council and the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation.
The park has already been given a big thumbs up by local skateboarders and BMX riders, who haven’t needed an invitation to test their wheels on the new facility over the last few months.
The Skate Park is centrally located at the corner of Heffron Street and Minjungbal Drive, Tweed Heads South.
The park features both bowl and street elements, with seating and landscaping making the facility practical and appealing for all ages.
The Tweed Heads Skate Park has been funded by the Australian Government’s Community Infrastructure Program ($250,000), Tweed Shire Council ($175,000), Tweed Clubs’ Community Development Support Expenditure Scheme (CDSE) ($75,000) and NSW Department of Sport and Recreation ($30,000).
The design of the skate park was developed following extensive consultation with young people and the wider community.
The focus is on a multi-leveled skate bowl with depths of four feet to seven feet and has been designed to cater for all skill levels of users.
The bowl has many elements including various pockets, a feature banked wall, extensions and rollover which will all assist in maximising the flow and overall function.
The facility design as has a formalised entrance with stairs, feature detailed handrails and signage.
The street section of the facility features sculptural and highly colourful elements along its length catering for street skaters.
Other works include landscaping, entry ramps, feature shade structure and seating.
“The feature skate bowl, together with landscape works and entry path, creates a complete facility, allowing the wider community to participate and providing something special for all young people in the area of the Tweed Shire,” Councillor Polglase said.
