Ballina Rugby Union farewells outgoing President
October 7, 2009
Ballina Rugby Union (BRU) held its annual presentation night, hosted by Chris Long at the clubhouse at Kalinga Street.
The night signified the end of a successful year for BRU with the Club winning two premierships, in Second and Third Grade, and the Far North Coast Club Championship.
Amongst the awards, the club presented the Clubman of the Year award to John Leon.
John first joined the club in 1988 and throughout that time has been a player, finally retiring at age 57, referee, committee member and had several years as club President in four seperate stints. John is also a life member of the club.
John’s tireless contributions have been cherished by the club, and the clubman award typified the level of respect that John commands from the club members.
Chris Long articulated this in a passionate description of “John being always available, not matter what was required or when, nothing was a problem”. A special thanks also went to John’s wife Shirley who has supported the club immesaurably throughout the years.
John announced that this season will be his last as President. Whilst acknowledging that this would be a tough decision, John still intends to be an active member of the club.
The club will also lose the services of Val Rowlands, who has decided that 2009 would be her last year as canteen co-ordinator. In what is often a thankless role, Chris Long, gave high praise to the contribution that Val has made over the last twelve years.
The major sponsor for BRC, the Westower Tavern (Westower), has announced that it will be continuing it’s support for the upcoming season. Club President, John Leon stating that “without the support of our generous sponsors our club could simply not function, and we are delighted that the Westower is continuing this into 2010, the Westower is a great supporter of the local community and we are proud to be involved with it.”
The club is holding its AGM at the clubhouse on Kalinga Street on 14 November and invites all club members to attend.
