Byron Shire Council allocates $35,000 towards Schoolies
October 3, 2009
Byron Shire Council agreed at last week’s Strategic Planning Meeting to support management during Schoolies with a funding allocation of $35,000.
Mayor Jan Barham said the funds have been allocated to provide for additional safety such as lighting and surf lifesaving services on Main Beach, plus extra waste collection and cleaning of public toilets.
Council will also fund a marquee to be placed next to the surf club to act as a rest and safety zone for the Schoolies.
Mayor Jan Barham said the formation of a co-ordinating group to consider the impacts and develop an action plan for the influx of young tourists was a positive step forward, and Council was pleased to commit additional funds towards the management of public infrastructure.
Schoolies in 2008 cost Byron Shire Council an extra $14,000 in clean-up and garbage services.
“It appears that Byron Bay is becoming a more attractive destination for school leavers and through service providers and the business community working together, we have an opportunity to guide how we would like to see the future of this event develop,” Mayor Barham said.
“School leavers will be coming to Byron Bay to unwind and celebrate the end of exams but we ask them to do so with respect to the environment and community.
“There is more to Byron Bay and surrounding areas than partying. We have a vibrant beach culture for surfing, kayaking and long walks and an ecologically significant hinterland for those who might want to explore the region’s environment.
“The area also offers a rich artistic and entertainment experience and an abundance of health and well-being opportunities. It’s all there to be explored and experienced.”

I think with the demand for schoolies in Byron they will find they’ll need to contribute a lot more than $35,000 to look after things.
