Cancer Council offers community groups grants
October 3, 2009
The Cancer Council NSW is offering grants for community groups to fund Far North Coast-based cancer control projects.
The purpose of the local Cancer Control Grant Program is to provide small amounts of funding to groups to assist with local cancer control needs.
“Cancer Council wants to help our local communities to develop solutions to local issues, by offering these grants,” said North Coast area manager, Patty Delaney.
“The Cancer Control Grants are one way the Cancer Council works with community organisations to use our collective resources and expertise in cancer issues.
“The grants are a practical local example of how money raised at events such as the Murwillumbah and Tweed Relays For Life are put back into the community.”
The grants are available to non-government-funded groups for projects working to support cancer patients in the community, new initiatives to promote cancer prevention or screening or research activities.
“There are many local needs for cancer control that cannot be identified and met from a State perspective. These needs can be more effectively met by local people working together,” Ms Delaney said.
Previous grant recipients have undertaken projects such as providing portable shade tents, funding a Tai-chi instructor for a support group, funding a grief and bereavement recovery program, covering transport costs and a display board. More than $52,000 in local grants has been distributed across the Far North Coast region in the past three years.
One recipient of a Cancer Council grant in 2008 was the Murwillumbah Community Centre for a portable shade marquee, available to the Murwillumbah community for use at outdoor events.
Not-for-profit community groups are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $3000 each. To be eligible, projects need to fall into one of the following categories:
- Research;
- Patient Support & Information;
- Cancer Prevention & Screening;
- Advocacy;
- Working in the Community.
Applications for this year’s grants will be assessed by The Cancer Council’s Far North Coast Region Advisory Committee.
Applications close on Friday 16th October 2009. To receive a grant application form, or for advice on whether your idea meets the criteria, please call your nearest Canccer Council Office in Coffs Harbour (66 598 400) or Alstonville (66 270 300)
