Tourism Minister to open symposium
October 12, 2009
The NSW Tourism Minister, Jodi McKay, will officially open the first Tourism Symposium in the Northern Rivers next Monday, 19 October.
“We are delighted that the Minister sees this Symposium as important enough to take time out of a Parliamentary sitting week to come and speak to delegates. She is very supportive of the work we are doing in the Northern Rivers,” said the CEO of Northern Rivers Tourism, Russell Mills.
There has been an excellent response to the ‘Innovate and Prosper’ Tourism Symposium which is being held in Byron Bay with only a few places remaining.
“In fact, the symposium has appeal to a wide cross-section of business which interacts with tourists in our region,” Mr Mills said.
“Apart from direct employment in tourism businesses, a significant number of other businesses share in the economic contribution that tourism makes to our region. For example, a hire car needs servicing and fuel, or a café needs staff and food supplies – these are provided by local businesses along the supply chain.”
The Symposium’s keynote speakers include from the UK, Dick Porter, co-founder of the world’s biggest youth travel business, STA Travel; Dr Tony Webber, the Chief Economist for Qantas; and Matthew Hingerty, the Managing Director of the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC).
In addition to the keynote speakers there will be over 20 presenters and successful operators sharing their skills with delegates over the two days.
The Symposium is being held at the Byron at Byron Resort, Spa and Conference Centre and is being seed funded through state and federal government flood recovery funding.
