New multi-bin system for Tweed residents begins 1 December

October 14, 2009

Tweed Shire Council has unveiled a new multi-bin waste collection system for domestic use which aims to substantially increase recycling rates.

More than 100,000 of the new bins will be distributed to households over the next few weeks in time for the first waste collection on Tuesday 1 December.

Mayor of Tweed Warren Polglase unveiled the new-look bins, new collection trucks and residents’ information kit at an official launch yesterday outside Solo Resource Recovery Centre at Chinderah.

“I welcome the new multi-bin system which will increase recycling in the Tweed, reduce landfill and provide an improved waste collection service to our residents,” Councillor Polglase said.

“We urge everyone to ‘Do the Right Bin’ by becoming familiar with the new coloured lids on the new bins – red for garbage, yellow for recycling and green for the optional organics service.

“Separating the bins provides a clearer message that the three bins are for three different kinds of waste.”

Cr Polglase said Tweed Shire Council was already a leader in waste services among councils on the North Coast as a prominent member of the North East Waste Forum (NEWF).

“We are taking the lead here again with our multi-bin system by adopting best practice and the standard Australian colours for bins which will reduce any confusion for our many newer residents,” Councillor Polglase said.

“This change affects well over 90 per cent of our residents with 36,000 services to householders across the Tweed each week.”

The Tweed’s recovery rate of materials for recycling hovers around 35 per cent. The introduction of the multi-bin system is a major step towards the State Government target of 66 per cent diversion from landfill by 2014.

Cr Polglase urged residents to remember not to use the new bins until their pick-up day on or after 1 December.

Councillor Polglase congratulated the four students whose designs were selected for a range of stickers to promote the new multi-bin system and the recycling message.

“We had more than 600 entries from across the Shire and they were all fantastic. I congratulate the winners: Talisha Atkinson from Tyalgum Public School, Carly Jarvis from Crystal Creek Public School, and Rose Bradfield and Luke Chaffer from Mt St Patrick Primary School,” he said.

Residents will receive one of the winning stickers in their comprehensive multi-bin information pack with their bins which will be delivered by Council’s contractor, Solo, in the coming weeks.

Alternatively, residents can view the information on Tweed Shire Council’s website www.tweed.nsw.gov.au or contact the Waste Unit on (02) 6670 2694 or email waste@tweed.nsw.gov.au
There will be no change to the optional green organics service, which is collected fortnightly for an annual fee.
