Clarence Valley residents celebrate Food Month

October 16, 2009

Yamba PrawnsThe Clarence Valley yields an amazing variety and abundance of quality produce. Mix this with award-winning chefs and enthusiastic culinary hobbyists and you have the recipe for Clarence Food Month.

“Clarence Valley residents have had their say and, like the rest of the world, they’re saying they want to reduce food miles, eat truly fresh food and eat seasonally,” Clarence Valley Council said.

“Clarence Food Month is about eating, cooking, growing and discovering locally produced food.

“Clarence Food Month coincides with the Sydney Morning Herald’s Sydney International Food Festival, which Clarence Valley Council is participating in through their regional events program.

“So, it’s all about food from the Big Smoke to the Big River!”

There’s plenty on during Clarence Food Month  including:

100 mile eating adventure: This is all about eating local. That is, not just eating at your local restaurant or café but, actually sourcing what you eat and drink from your own local area. So, the adventure is to source what you eat and drink from within a 100 mile radius of your home.

What’s on the Clarence Menu: Clarence cafés and restaurants promoting a local food menu item made up of at least 75% locally grown or produced produce for $25 or less.

Clarence Cook Off: Using locally produced food, Clarence Valley residents will compete against one another cooking up the tastiest dish they can. All done on a barbecue, they may be able to ‘ask the
audience’ for help and the panel of judges will give their opinion. Where and when: 22/10/09 8:30am Grafton Farmers Market Market Square, Grafton. 25/10/09 12 noon Yamba Markets Ford Park, Yamba

Cooking up the Clarence: Local cooking classes with local flavour.
