Northern Rivers focus of food and agritourism study

October 21, 2009

The Northern Rivers region is the focus of a Regional Food and Agritourism Study commissioned by the Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke.

Federal Member for Page Janelle Saffin today said the Bureau of Rural Science (BRS) had been asked to prepare case studies considering options for the future of connecting agriculture and the tourism sectors.

“This national project was instigated in the Northern Rivers when Minister Burke accepted my invitation to attend the inaugural Food and Agritourism Forum run by Southern Cross University in September last year,” she said.

“The Minister was impressed with the case we presented and could see widespread potential in this area.

“I have continued to work with SCU to provide input into this study and now the Northern Rivers will feature in future considerations by the BRS.”

Ms Saffin confirmed that the bureau currently was in the region gathering information and conducting meetings with producers, farmers, chefs and tourism operators.

“It is hoped that this report will initiate Government policy to address issues and support the development of this region’s food and agritourism businesses,” she said.
