Federal funding for Murwillumbah, Byron Bay bike paths
October 23, 2009
Richmond MP Justine Elliot today announced the Rudd Government will contribute more than $348,000 for two new bike path projects at Murwillumbah and Byron Bay.
The Tweed Shire Council will receive $180,000 for the Murwillumbah Cycleway Link. This funding will create a concrete bike path, linking Riveroak Drive to Ray Street, providing a safer link to the Murwillumbah CBD. The cycleway will be 348 metres long and two metres wide.
The $560,000 project is being delivered in conjunction with the Tweed Shire Council and will create 20 jobs during construction.
A further two work experience opportunities will be created on the ‘Shared Path Project’ which will link Ewingsdale Road to Byron Bay.
The Rudd Government will provide more than $168,000 to the $370,700 project being delivered in partnership with Byron Shire Council.
“The Murwillumbah and Byron Bay communities will receive economic, environmental and health benefits from these bikeways,” Mrs Elliot said.
“They are two of the 174 projects the Rudd Government is funding across Australia. These projects are supporting more than 1900 jobs, keeping locals in work.
“These projects are part of the $40 million National Bike Paths Projects fund and a key element of our Economic Stimulus Plan.
“The Rudd Government’s investment in community infrastructure on the North Coast will encourage healthier lifestyles amongst residents and create more sustainable communities.
“By building better cycling infrastructure, the Government is helping take cars off our local roads and reducing carbon emissions over the longer term.”
