Saffin reaffirms Government’s highway commitment
October 26, 2009
Member for Page Janelle Saffin has reaffirmed the Rudd Government’s commitment to the full duplication of the Pacific Highway by 2016.
“In response to some misleading media reports, and claims by the National Party leader Warren Truss, I can reassure residents of the Northern Rivers that there has been no change to the Government’s timetable for upgrading the Pacific Highway,” she said.
“In Lismore on the weekend the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, confirmed the commitment to the completion of the dual carriageway by 2016.
“Minister Albanese was in Lismore to open the Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre Youth Plaza and to announce a total of $627,000 in joint funding with Lismore and Kyogle councils for local bike paths.
“As Minister Albanese said, $3.1 billion has been allocated to progress the work over the next six years – more than double what the previous Coalition Government spent on the highway in 12 years in office.
“I find it curious that the National Party is running a scare campaign about the Pacific Highway upgrade at the same time as the Coalition says it would cut back infrastructure funding if elected.”
